GSI Mock Draft: Rounds 11-12

by Dan Clasgens 7/23/2008 8:45:00 PM

The final rounds of the Mock Draft don't offer much excitement to casual fans, but the experienced ones are going to take notes of developing trends:

RECAP: ROUND 1 | ROUND 2 | ROUND 3 | ROUND 4 | ROUND 5 | ROUND 6 | ROUND 7 | ROUND 8 | ROUNDS 9-10

ROUND 11
101. PREUTH - Amani Toomer - WR
102. CLASGENS - Jeremy Shockey - TE
103. HUMBERT - Derrick Mason - WR
104. BOLTON - Anthony Gonzalez -  WR
105. DINSMORE - Patrick Crayton - WR
106. MURDICO - Donte' Stallworth
107. SIMS - Heath Miller - TE
108. SIMON - Todd Heap - TE
109. WETZEL - Felix Jones - RB
110. FISCHER - Bobby Engram - WR

ROUND 12
111. FISCHER - David Garrard - QB
112. WETZEL - Ricky Williams - RB
113. SIMON - Seattle - DEF
114. SIMS - Bryant Johnson - WR
115. MURDICO - Marc Bulger - QB
116. DINSMORE - Jake Delhomme - QB
117. BOLTON - Ahman Green - RB
118. HUMBERT - Green Bay DEF
119. CLASGENS - Ahmad Bradshaw - NYG
120. PREUTH - Phillip Rivers - QB

My Picks: Shockey going to New Orleans is just what the doctor ordered and after missing out on my Tier 1 guys - Witten, Winslow, and Gates (assuming he's healthy) - it paid off waiting. Shockey needs to prove he's healthy, but the Saints' system is going to bode well for his numbers. I expect him to be a top 5 player at the position. Ahmad Bradshaw is an intriguing player and as my RB5 I couldn't ask for more upside. He was a big part to the Giants' Super Bowl run last year and picked up the slack when Jacbos was hurt. It's like Thunder and Lightning II in New York. Bradshaw could turn into a Tiki-like performer given the opportunity.

Nice Finds: WR Anthony Gonzalez (104), Patrick Crayton (105), David Garrard (111), and Seattle DEF (113)

Final Take: There is amazingly decent running back depth 120 picks into the draft. I am not as sold on the receiver depth being there though. I grabbed Kevin Curtis and Joey Galloway a couple rounds earlier to fill my bench, leaving some to look at chumps in the latter rounds (i.e. HUMBERT - Derrick Mason). Waiting on tight end and defense is going to pay off nicely for me, but this is a 10-team draft. I could've got burned a bit in a larger league.

great assessment Dan. RB depth is still there, which is suprising, but WRs are just awful. I love my Crayton pick, With a little more consistency, he can be a nice fill in for me. I hated the Delhomme pick, only because while I like the guy, he's coming off an injury. I liked other QBs more, but since he's my backup, I took a guy I'm rooting for and actually like instead of someone like Vince Young or Phillip Rivers. This same theory could've applied to Jon Kitna (I like the guy a lot), but his INTs are just brutal.

Best pick of the draft was Garrard. I was hoping to snag Crayton and then Garrard. I would've loved that, but J-Fish snaked him. Other good picks were Bryant Johnson (potential sleeper), Felix Jones (I love this guy) and Mason (who gets targeted way too much to be a chump).

I am a little surprised at the 'chump' call on Derrick Mason. Last season he was one of the biggest free agent pick-ups finishing with 1,087 yards on 103 catches - fourth in the NFL. Yes, we play for this year not last, but Mason will get the ball thrown to him a lot and he's a good #4 or #5 receiver in the 11th round.

I do like the Bradshaw pick. The Giants have always liked multiple RBs. Even when Tiki was piling up the yardage, he did not get the end-zone carries. Bradshaw has great value on that team.

I too am surprised at the RB depth this late. However, if you play in a deeper league, that probably won't be the case. I LOVE my Garrard pick. I didn't think there was anyway in hell he'd be there in Round 12. But he's a guy that not only provides depth, but he gives me legitimate matchup plays, considering my QB1 is Roethlisberger. Not to mention, he now has Porter (if healthy) to throw to along with Reggie Williams, who had solid year in 2007.

I was also happy to get Engram this late, considering the lack of WR depth. Deeper leagues take note. If the depth is short in this 10-team mock, just think what it will be in your league. If he doesn't let his contract issues cloud his judgement, I think Engram could be a great find here. Hackett went to Carolina. Other than Burleson, there isn't that much competition for targets. And I have no confidence in Julius Jones creating a fantastic run game, which means I think Hasselbald and the 'Hawks are going to have to throw to be competitive.

Not a bad situation for a guy that is my WR4.

I don't think that Mason is a chump. I think he'll continue to get targets. But what I question is who'll be throwing him the ball? I love Flacco, but he won't win the job out of camp. Mr. OSU, Troy Smith, took 1st string snaps on the first day of camp. He threw 5 passes, completed one, was picked off three times. But most embarrasingly, the last pick was made by his 40-something year old DB coach, who had stepped in to show a rookie DB how it's done. It can't be a good sign when you can't beat your old, mostly out of playing shape DB coach, can it? And we've all seen Kyle Boller's sad, tired act enough to know that ain't going to fly either.

So does Mason get his targets? Sure. But does the ball get to him where he can catch it? I ain't so sure.

I snagged Anthony Gonzalez in the 11th as sort of a handcuff to Marvin Harrison. He's a decent 4/5 WR but has the added bonus of moving up if something happens again to Harrison.

I liked Dan's Bradshaw pick and I was in a debate with myself over who to take: him or Ahman Green. I figured Green actually had a shot at winning a starting job in Houston and was worth an 12th round flyer over some of the part time guys for my 4th RB
