This weekend as the Mets paid visit to Great American Ballpark to tangle with the Reds, I got an up close look at Jose Reyes. Fantasy owners that spent big bucks or a high draft pick have been rewarded, but some are claiming disappointment.
Reyes has stayed under .300 at the plate nearly all season, but he's heated up as of late, batting .304 over the past two weeks. In Sunday's finale we got a glimpse of what this guy can do on the base paths. He stole third early in the game and then hitting a record-breaking triple later.
It mark the 63rd triple in his career, one better than Mookie Wilson.
Taking a look at his numbers for the season and he's on pace for another big output - .294 BA, 17 HR, 73 RBI, 115 runs, 54 SB, 73 BB - all good enough to put Reyes atop my fantasy rankings at shortstop.
The one glaring disappointment is the stolen base output. Remember, you are talking about a guy last season that stole a career-high 78 bases. If he can keep the rest of his numbers in tact and still manage to swipe bags at that pace he would be an elite fantasy player. For now, I am still ready to call him the best at his position.
I know this, it's worth the price of admission to see this guy leg out a triple.
