Carson Palmer: The Buckeye Hater

by Chris Murdico 7/27/2008 10:31:00 AM

As I'm sure we all know by now, Carson Palmer has come out and said how much he despises the (not capitalized) Ohio State University. Apparently some Luckeye fans aren't taking to kindly to this. While I understand them being upset about his comments, some people are taking this to a level that's just crazy. As posted on Lance McAlister's blog, some people are calling for a boycott of Carson. This is just ridiculous.

People that have been fans of the Bengals for years are saying they are going to boycott not only Palmer but the entire Bengals team while he's the quarterback or even on the team period. I understand how much fans of OSU love their team, and for those that actually attended there, they love the school as a whole. Guess what? Palmer loves his school too. He has the right to bash on OSU. Just because he plays in the same state as the school doesn't mean he should hold his tongue when talking about a team he despises. His words may have been a little over the top, especially for him, but if that's the way he feels who are the OSU fans to tell him he should keep quiet.

Ohio State and USC play each other in the second game of the season this year, which is what prompted Palmer to make the comments he did. I have absolutely no problem with him saying what he did. Granted I'm along side him as a OSU hater. I've been a big Notre Dame fan for years. Had his comments been directed at them, I would have laughed and said he's entitled to his opinion and I can totally understand why he feels the way he feels. He loves USC and everything about it. Just because he can't stand the Buckeyes doesn't mean all their fans should boycott him or the Bengals. But I wouldn't expect anything less from the OSU fans. I know a lot of them and while I know the passion they have for their team, they can go overboard with it at times and not know when to just let something go.

After hearing/reading Palmer's comments I have to say that I love the guy even more. There's no reason to suddenly not like him just because he doesn't like your school or your team. If he was an OSU grad and had played for the Buckeyes (well he wouldn't be a pro QB now that's for sure) he would have said the same about a team like USC I'm sure. You can't expect the guy to suddenly love the Buckeyes just because he plays and lives in Ohio. That's just asking way too much in my opinion. Buckeye fans just need to chill and get over it. What they need to worry about is heading out west to play USC and, in Palmer's words, "going out to the Coliseum and experience L.A. and get an old-fashioned Pac-10 butt-whipping."

For as big and bad as OSU fans love to act like, they are the most thin-skinned collection of fans I've ever seen. Maybe if they could look at themselves through some sort of out-of-body experience, they'd understand why people find them so easy to dislike. Being one of the big dogs comes with a price; if you can't deal with that, well then maybe they'd be more comfortable as a second-tier program. Or...maybe this is just them lashing out because they've been embarrassed in the last two BCS championship games.

I will admit that I am a big OSU fan. However, I am okay with what he said. I won't go to the extreme of boycotting the Bengals because of what he said. I just hope he eats his words.

When you are in a leadership position such as Mr. Palmer what you say effects others. His family, his fans, those who pay his salary...
Insulting your own state's team and subsequently many of your own Bengal fans is at best stupid and possibly, knowing Ohio sports fans, the end of Palmer in Ohio. Perhaps that what he wanted all along.

I think certain people are missing the point here, including yourself there John. Yes, Carson is in a leadership position, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to speak his mind. He isn't affiliated with OSU in any way. He's a Trojan and with the the two teams pitted to face each other in about a month, he's got every right to back his team/school and blast on the Luckeyes. OSU is only Ohio's team to those that actually care about them, while that may be the majority of the state, that doesn't make them the "state's team" to everyone living in it.

Buckeye fans are just too sensitive and live in their own little silver and scarlet colored bubble...they don't realize that not everyone cares about their team and that a lot of people actually hate the school along with their fans because they feel like they have some sort of entitlement. Get off your high horse and realize that you're not the premiere team in college football, or have you forgotten the smackdowns received in the last two championship games?

The OSU "nuts" have taken this to such an extreme, that it has become quite the comedy. I love it when people judge others for things they're guilty of themselves. It's rather humorous to me that the only people in the universe that seem to be offended by Palmer's comments are fans of BOTH the Bengals and the Buckeyes (hereafter referred to as "Buckals"). I want to say that any opinions I have are 100% unbiased since I'm neither an Ohio State football nor a Cincinnati Bengals fan. I wasn't even a CP fan before he spoke his mind (though I know he's a great talent), but now, he's made a new fan. Allow me to make a few points to all Buckals stating why "boycotting" the Bengals is the most hypocritical thing I've heard in quite some time. First of all (WARNING: this one might a little hard for some of you to understand), a college football team and an NFL program have absolutely NO affiliation with one another regardless of whether or not both teams lie within the same imaginary lines we call a "state." Secondly, and my personal favorite, CP's comments reflect the EXACT same attitude and personality you Buckals display every single Saturday and Sunday during football season. It's why you keep renewing your season tickets despite witnessing only one winning season in the past two decades. It's the reason you wish you could walk up to each and every Steelers fan at Paul Brown Stadium and choke them with their Terrible Towels. It's your hatred for the Dawg Pound. It's called a rivalry. But, you don't just watch. Your passion goes far beyond that. You Bungals dress in any orange, black, red & silver apparel you can find. You scream. You throw things at the TV. And curse. And if it's the 4th Saturday in November, we know you're running on pure adrenaline because you haven't slept for 3 nights knowing that if your beloved Buckeyes can somehow outscore that team I dare not mention, then they might just back their way into the National Championship game once again by not having to play in a conference title game and praying that all 6 teams ahead of them in the BCS standings lose theirs. And for the record, that's all passion from an individual who (most likely) doesn't/didn't even attend OSU. Let alone play football there. Let alone be the starting QB. THAT'S a reason for passion and freedom of speech. You hate the black & gold. You have the blue & gold. He hates the Red and Silver. AND HE SAID IT. It's not a crime; it's a right. And no one cares but you, Buckals. USC fans love CP (and hate the Buckeyes) now more than ever. OSU (but not Bengals) fans are fired up for the USC game, and though the "nuts" fans may hate him right now, it's relevant. He verbally trashed the school they love. Bengals (but not OSU) fans could care less about the comment, I promise. Once last note to all Bungals: If you feel in your hearts that you have no choice but to boycott the Bengals, please consider becoming a Patriots fan. I hear Tom Brady loves OSU.

Wow, you make some valid points. First of all, you're totally convinced that OSU is returning to the national championship game... yet you HOPE they beat USC. I just hope they COMPETE with USC so we're not channel surfing by halftime to find a couple MAC teams playing. Secondly, no one said (or thinks) that Carson Palmer is going to change what OSU is going to do this year. But the Buckeyes better change it themselves or else they'll get demolished by yet another top notch program in whatever bowl game invites them. The bottom line is, the Buckeyes are a pretty good team, but not national champion material. You've got your head in the sand if you honestly think they've been to 2 straight title games because they're one of the top 2 teams in the country - that just happened to have a horrible night on 2 straight title game nights. They're only there because of the loophole in the system that allows the Big Ten to avoid playing a conference championship game. It's a luxury to sit in the catbird seat and wait for those ahead of you to stumble while you don't even have to put anything on the line. Buckeye fans should pray that the BCS stays around for a long time. If this thing ever does turn into an playoff of the top 8 teams, OSU will never see a national championship game again. Trojans by 2 touchdowns.
