Fall Of The Evil Empire

by Jimmy Dinsmore 6/17/2008 7:01:00 AM

Let me preface this by saying that I always have, and always will hate the New York Yankees. The team referred to as the Evil Empire might not live up to its billing any more.

The Yankees currently sit six games back of first place Boston and are only four games over .500. Pretty mediocre. Are we starting to say the end of the Yankee dynasty, which started (at least THIS dynasty) in the mid-90s?

Probably not. But, I can make a case that there might not be as many reasons to hate the Yankees as before. No longer will any team just concede the AL East or the AL pennant to them. Boston won the AL East last year, en route to ANOTHER World Series title for the Yankees nemesis. In fact, for all this talk of the Evil Empire, the Yankees haven't even been to a World Series since 2003. Sure, they've won 90 or more games every year since then, but the competition has either caught up with the Yankees or the dynasty is coming to an end.

If you look at their current roster, they are an old team. Their elite players are all over 30 years, with many being in their late 30s.

Their younger players, excluding Joba Chamberlain, haven't panned out. Melky Cabrera is just average. Phil Hughes has been unimpressive. Ian Kennedy has been a train wreck. Darrell Rasner has yet to prove himself and outside of Robinson Cano, their offense lacks youth.

In order to maintain the dynasty, the Yankees have had to decimate their farm system along the way, so their is no fountain of youth to tap into. So, with the Yankees' six games and their best pitcher Chien-Ming Wang out for most of the season now, could THIS be the year, the Yankees finally miss the postseason? We can only hope so.

While I appreciate the Yankees and their history, it is nice to see the big boys come back to earth. However, I group the Yankees with the Red Sox - BoYanks. Both of those organizations need to return to normalcy for the world of baseball to be at peace.

Go Rays!

I detect some bitterness from you guys. The Yankees are a multi-million dollar mess right now, but I thought it was all Joe Torre's fault (enter sarcastic chuckle here).

Ahhh Jimmy, how I love and appreciate your cander when it comes to the Evil Empire. I, like you, have made it no secret that I hate the Yankees. I'm actually a big Red Sox fan...have been for years. I'll never love them like I do the hometown boys in Red, but if its not the Reds, its the Red Sox.

With that said, I have to agree with Jim when it comes to wanting to see both the Yanks and Sawx come back to the rest of the pack. Now if it were the Reds dominating year in and year out, the story would be different...but that's the way it with anyone's' hometown team.

I hope the Rays hang around all season and give the Red Sox a run for their money. Just like the Yankees, its crazy to see the Mets spend the money they have on talent only to fall on their faces and be looking up at the Phillies and even the Marlins. Just wish the Reds could win with the talent they have so the whole "they need to spend money to win" notion will just go away in Cincy.

let's not forget that during the Yankees reign of Evilness, that the Marlins have won two World Series, while rebuilding their franchise after each one. So I'd say there is parity still in baseball.
