Reds: Who's #5 In Rotation?

by Dan Clasgens 6/1/2008 3:52:00 PM

The Reds placed Josh Fogg on the 15-day DL with a sore back Sunday and called up right-handed reliever Gary Majewski. The move leaves Cincinnati with more uncertainty over its fifth starter's spot.

Fogg was handed the No. 5 spot in the rotation back after Matt Belisle was sent down earlier in the week, but the 31-year-old right hander got hit hard again Saturday as he allowed seven hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings of an 8-7 victory over Atlanta. After the game, Fogg complained about back spasms.

"We need some pitching help bad," manager Dusty Baker said. "We can't wait."

Fogg started the season in the rotation, but was demoted to long relief after three poor starts. He went 15 days between appearances out of the bullpen.

The Reds optioned Belisle to Triple-A on Tuesday to turn him into a reliever and is not an option for a return. That leaves the question who will pitch on Thursday in Philadelphia against Cole Hammels?

Though Jeremy Affeldt could be given a spot start or perhaps the team looks at other minor league options (i.e. Matt Maloney), but my money is on Homer Bailey. Bailey has struggled of late, but there seem to be too many pieces of the puzzle falling in place to suggest it will not be him.

Reds' beat writer Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News certainly thinks so. He reports on his blog that Bailey was scheduled to pitch for the Class AAA Louisville Bats Sunday night and will, but he is expected to pitch only two innings and take the rest of the night off.

Whomever makes the start for the Reds on Thursday will have to square off against Hamels. The Phillies' left-handed ace has dominated the Reds in his short career (see below).

HAMELS THREE STARTS VS. REDS
2008: 1-0, 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K's

2006: 0-0, 5 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 BB, 7 K's

Totals: 2-0, 21 IP, 2 ER, 11 H, 10 BB, 26 K's - 0.86 ERA, 0.95 WHIP

Dan's man crush on Homer Bailey continues. Affeldt should get the start. Bailey is a mental case and is NOT ready for the big leagues.

According to a guy I know that works for Channel 19, they received a call from the media down in Louisville saying that Bailey was pulled in the 3rd inning of his start today. They say he's coming up to start the game on Thursday.

While he's had a few rough outings of late in AAA, I still think he's ready to come up and pitch in the big leagues. He's definitely more ready than he was when they brought him up last year. The youth movement is on in Cincy, and its proving huge dividends right now. Getting Bailey up here and with guys he's been around for months like Bruce, Janish, and Andy Phillips could help him. On top of that he'll get to sit with and talk to guys like Harang, Arroyo, Volquez and Cueto, guys that could help him and straighten his head out if need be.

I like the move. I didn't like it last year, but now is as good a time as any to bring Bailey up this year. He's got a tough draw going up against Hamels and the strong Phillies offense in his first start, but at least he gets to start his first game in Philly, away from GABP.

Jimmy there is no way that you think that the Reds' worn out bullpen can bare going through Affeldt's growing pains in getting stretched out to innings. While I will agree that Bailey's play of late doesn't warrant the call up right now, the Reds simply don't have any better options.

I do agree it's sad when Affeldt is the ONLY starting option, without going to the minors. Mayhaps we'll see Jockety's first trade of his Reds tenure?
Let me put it this way. I want Homer to succeed. I agree completely with Chris that they brought him up too early last year and it might have crushed him. But if this guys is so mentally fragile, he's never going to cut it.
And I agree 100% with Chris as well that the youth movement has spread Reds fever throughout the tri-state. It's quite exciting. We got rid of SOME of the dead weight on the roster (Patterson and Hatteberg). Now, let's hope Griffey hits #600 so we can cart his ass out to anyone who'll take him. Get more dead weight off the lineup. Did you see John Erardi's in the Enquirer today about Griffey? It's fantastic. Griffey should be in the sixth hole, not the three hole. He's killing us in that spot.

Griffey is far from dead weight. There can be a strong argument made about him not hitting third right now, but putting him in the same class and breath of Scott Hatteberg and Corey Patterson is ridiculous.
