The more you spend, the less you get

by Adam Bartel 5/3/2008 11:28:00 AM

Everyone knows that the major league baseball teams that spend the most money end up performing the best, right?  Well, in 2008 it isn't working out quite like that.

A stat geek named Ben Fry has put together a pretty cool looking graphic that orders each team's record and payroll, and it's pretty clear that, in the season's first month, there's about zero correlation between salary expense and performance.  They also have graphics for the previous three seasons, I can't get them to show on my screen, but your computer may be more advanced than mine.

It's still very early in the season, so it's hard to read too much into this analysis, but it's still an interesting item to keep an eye on.

this is flawed, for two reasons. 1.) It's early. Things usually shake out and the cream rises to the top. 2.) The more you spend, the more you win theory applies to long term, sustained success. There are teams that are young (and therefore cheap salaries) that hit at the right time. This year's Arizona D-Backs are a good example. The Rockies last year, as well as the Brewers too. But, look at the WS Champs last year. The Boston Red Sox. The big spenders. All of that being said, I used to be a huge proponent of a salary cap, like the NFL for MLB, but I've backed off that. I don't think that would be a good idea. I think it would make it very generic and very boring. But maybe something more like the NBA's cap would work and make the smaller market teams a little more competitive, over a longer period of time.
