With the Kentucky Derby less than two weeks away let's take a look at some of the latest news and notes from the Triple Crown trail:
Leg fracture sidelines War Pass
Trainer Nick Zito announced early Saturday morning that X-rays taken Friday afternoon revealed a tiny fracture in a sesamoid bone in the left front leg of War Pass, according to the Daily Racing Form. The fracture, which Zito described as "very small," has very big ramifications. It removes War Pass from the May 3 Kentucky Derby, changes the complexion of the race because of the defection of a key front-runner, and improves the position of everyone on the graded stakes earnings list, since War Pass, the two-year old champion, was ranked first, with $1.47 million.
Pletcher continues to roll at Keeneland
A week after finishing first and second in the Toyota Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland with Monba and Cowboy Cal, trainer Todd Pletcher was in the winner's circle once again in Saturday's with Behindatthebar ($13.60), who by a length over Samba Rooster in the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes. Though it might have seemed that Pletcher now has three horses en route to the Kentucky Derby, he said it would be unlikely. If Behindatthebar does run in one of the Triple Crown races, "it probably will be in the Preakness," the trainer told the Lexington Herald-Leader.
