Draft Spotlight: Brian Brohm

by Dan Clasgens 4/20/2008 12:42:00 PM

It wasn't too long ago that Brian Brohm was touted as a sure-fire top 5 pick in the NFL Draft. However, after a senior season upon which Louisville greatly underacheived, he dropped a bit on draft boards. Now it is unclear whether or not Brohm will even go in the first round.

Brohm lacks the rocket arm, but is accurate and has great mechanics. You can tell the kid was the son of a coach. He learns quick and will only get better with experience. As a senior, Brohm actually threw as many interceptions as he had in his first three seasons, but he did also throw for a career high 4,024 yards and 30 touchdowns to go along with a 65.1% completion rate.

Boston College's Matt Ryan is largely believed to be the draft's top quarterback and one that Baltimore, who picks No. 8 overall, apparently covets. Assuming that holds true, where does Brohm fall?

The 22-year old is going to provide great value where ever he winds up. He is the top of a second tier of quarterbacks that also includes Michigan's Chad Henne and Delaware's Joe Flacco. As has been the case in past drafts, quarterback-needy teams might consider trading into the back half of the first round to snare one of the second-level signal-callers. Consider this recent history:

In 2007, the Browns dealt back in to select Notre Dame's Brady Quinn (No. 22). Two years prior, the Redskins made a similar move to snare Auburn's Jason Campbell (No. 25). In 2004, the Bills traded back for J.P. Losman (No. 22) and the year before that, the Ravens swung a deal with the Patriots to get Kyle Boller (No. 19).

I see a trade coming, but most of the mock drafts I have checked out see Ryan either going to the Falcons at #3 or the Ravens at #8. Whichever team don't get Ryan in Round 1 will turn to Brohm in Round 2. There is going to be a surprise team pop out and make a move at this guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see Minnesota to make a move and maybe even Miami.

is it me, or the First Round QBs getting weaker and weaker every year. Who was the last real impact QB taken in the first round. Carson? Maybe Vince Young, although one can argue that he's yet to prove it.
It's early still but Alex Smith (for the all the smarts he has) has yet to do anything. Matt Leinart, if he can stop partying, might be something. Jamarcus Russell, with no talent around him, will this guy ever succeed, is he even good enough, smart enough to overcome it?
When it comes to the NFL draft, the most steady positions that have had NFL-translated success come from the o-line and d-line. Some stud LBs never make it in the NFL. Some can't miss DBs, never fully pan out. If I was drafting, I'd go with actual can't misses and sign free agents and avoid the Brian Brohm's of the draft.

I differ in my take. I think Brohm is the better option for the pros and a guy that is going to bring great value in late Round 1 (should a team trade up) or early Round 2.

I do agree with Jimmy in the sense that not every year has a Carson Palmer-type quarterback sitting there at No. 1.

but teams feel obligated to listen to Mel Jr. and take the "franchise QB". Most of the franchises fail though, sadly. Jamarcus Russell will never be anything. Alex Smith either. Let's look at the best QB in the NFL, Tom Brady. Mel Jr. didn't think anything of him. And he was drafted as an afterthought. You can find talent, you just have to find it, not listen to stuffed shirts. And you don't get it from watching them lift weights or run sprints or throw from their knees in combines either. I want to watch tape, show them tape, have them break things down and interview them. That's what I would do.

There are examples on both ends of it though. What about John Elway, Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, and even this year's Super Bowl winner Eli Manning. For every Tom Brady there is one of them. If you are the Atlanta Falcons and have a shot at Matt Ryan at No. 3, you have to consider it.
