Crean in at Indiana

by Dan Clasgens 4/1/2008 8:33:00 PM

The Indiana Hoosiers wanted to make some noise before Final Four weekend in San Antonio. They wasted no time following Tom Crean's team being knocked out of the tournament to ink the Marquette coach to fill its vacancy.

The move closes the six-week nightmare that cast a dark cloud over the school. From the dismisal of Calvin Sampson to the 3-4 mark posted under the interim coach Dan Dakich. An Indiana season that started with so much promise ended nastily for the school.

Crean led Marquette to the Final Four in 2003 and now has the challenge of rebuilding Indiana as a national power while reshaping their tarnished to reputation to become a squeaky clean program. He went 190-96 in nine seasons at Marquette.

Assuming freshman Eric Gordon announces he's going pro during his scheduled Monday press conference, Crean may enter next year having lost all five starters.

Starting forwards D.J. White and Lance Stemler both finished their senior seasons, and it's uncertain whether Bassett and Ellis, two of the starting guards, will return after being punished for missing an appointment last week. When they didn't show up to run laps the next day, Dakich decided to dismiss them from the team.

this is a great hire for IU. Crean is a good man (no scumbag like Samspon) and a good coach. With the name of IU behind him, he can really open some doors. Some might argue that IU has fallen so far that Crean leaving Marquette, a Big East team, is a step down. I say Crean had taken Marquette as far as he could. While it won't be overnight, the sky is the limit for IU with Crean at the helm.

How about former Ohio U. star Geno Ford taking over the coaching job at Kent State?! As a fellow Bobcat alum I would have rather seen him succeed in Athens, but I still hope he does well in his new job. Either way, where is the love for the MAC?

I about drove my car off the road when I got a call from my brother, saying that it was going to be Crean. As bad as Indiana has blown this entire Sampson debacle from a public relations perspective, and allowed Dan Dakich to make decisions he had no business making (I'll spare you guys the 3000 word post I was going to write), I completely expected they'd bungle this too.

Given that I was convinced that it would be Lon Kruger (or worse, Dakich), this is a fantastic hire. I didn't think he would even be in play given the likelihood that he would succeed Izzo at Michigan State. He's a clean guy, very good coach, and he'll get the ship righted.

As for Ford, I knew I recognized that name. He's awful young though isn't he? I'm guessing 33-34, that's pretty solid to get a head gig at a respected school that young. You can't ask for a lot more than that.

Crean is a safe, middle of the road hire that won't return IU to their glory days that is for sure. I don't think anyone in the Big 10 is worried about it. IU could have done better.

Explain how Bret. Who was going to take that job? This program is a mess; we're thrilled we were able to get Crean. So I'm curious who, realistically (that means no Pitino/Pearl/Izzo/Calipari names that IU had no shot at getting), you think would have been a better hire and would actually have come.

don't try reason with Bret, he is never happy. You're wasting your time. Reasonable people think Crean is a good hire. He was the best choice considering all those factors you mentioned.

Adam,

I didn't say you had better options or big names I simply said the he was a middle of the road hire and I stand by that statement. You could have done a lot worse but thinking this guy is going to bring you any banners is a pipe dream.

Mike Davis, the king of buffoons, took them to a Final Four, so I would say you're dead wrong, unless you belive Crean is a worse coach than Davis. In which case, you'd be dead wrong on that.

I'm way confused here. Comment one says IU could have done better. Comment two says we didn't have better options. Ooook...

Crean won at Marquette, a program with minimal success since Al Maguire left. He'll be fine at IU with a better recruiting base and larger national reputation, I'll guarantee a final four within five years.

Adam, what do you want to wager that IU isn't in the Final Four in Five years under Crean?
