Meet Brandon "Bo" Kunkle. Bo is an assistant football coach for the Fairborn High Skyhawks in Fairborn, Ohio, and to pay the bills he works as a bartender and DJ. Bo is also a contestant on MTV's runaway hit/trainwreck reality dating show A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila 2, or as I refer to it, the STD Appendix to the New England Journal of Medicine.
For those not familiar with the show, it's a reality dating show, with the twist that both women and men are competing for the affection of Ms. Tequila. Whereas contestants on most shows compete in relatively tame challenges to score points with their desired, this show forces both sexes to go through tribulations such as x-rated fashion shows, wrestling in jello-like substances, and other sexually charged contests against each other, as well as get into alcohol fueled fights. And as for the ringleader, Ms. Tequila herself...here's a link to her Wikipedia page - pretty much every other site that she's on is a bit unsafe for work purposes and would give you hives in the process.
This is a tricky subject, because to a lot of people the idea of bisexuality of any sort tends to be a hot button. But put that aside for a moment if you can. If you were a parent of a high school student, would you feel good about having your son be coached by someone that participates in the above competitions (which are just a sample of the contests) for the "love" of someone that has as questionable habits and tastes that Tila does?
I have to say, I'm hardly a prude, and it takes a lot to make me uncomfortable, but I think I'd have a problem with it if my kid was going to Fairborn (although the Skyhawks' 1-9 record in 2007 might have been a cause for concern already). It's one thing to watch this on TV and be amused/alarmed by this sort of show; it's quite another to have someone in a position of respect within the community condoning participation in it. And you can't really claim that what he does on his own time is his own business; he gave that right up the second he signed on the dotted line with MTV.
As more and more reality shows crop up, and as Youtube becomes a greater part of our lives, the amount of transparency into our public figures' lives is going to increase. By all accounts, Bo seems like a good guy who wants to do right. Unfortunately for him, he may have to learn the hard way that, if he wants to be working with kids, he needs to keep more of his life private. Or, maybe he's decided that he wants to become a reality celebrity, and that's ok too.
