Player profile: Rick Ankiel

Remember in Major League when Rick Vaughn came out to the song Wild Thing? Now, remember when Rick Ankiel did his best Rick Vaughn (pre-wire rimmed glasses) and completely lost his confidence and eye for the plate. It was one of the saddest things you've seen in baseball. Ankiel couldn't find the strike and threw pitches all the way to the back stop, in the postseason no less. Well, that same Ankiel, now only 28, put his athletic ability to work for him. Last year, he made his debut in the majors as an outfielder for the Cardinals.

In only 47 games for the Cards, Ankiel hit 11 HRs and drove in 39 runs while hitting .285. Very, very impressive for a converted pitcher. The big knock on Ankiel is that, since he is still a "new" hitter, his eye is bad and he's prone to swing at bad pitches, which accounts for his 42 Ks last year.  This season, Ankiel will have an everyday job with the Cardinals and manager Tony LaRussa has expressed enormous confidence in Ankiel as a hitter. He's working in Spring Training on developing more discipline at the plate and trying to take pitches. If he can accomplish this, the sky is the limit.

Even so, Ankiel is a major sleeper candidate in all league formats. I just drafted him in round 22 of our mock draft. For this late, he could be quite a find. Some fantasy sites have Ankiel projected to hit 30+ HRs and drive in over 90 runs. Consider that his combined MLB and AAA season in 2007 was 43 HRs/128 RBIs, I would say this Wild Thing can make a fantasy owner's heart sing.

It is appropriate that you introduced your post with a movie reference as you couldn't dream up a script that would've told the story of Ankiel's career. It's a shame that the performance-enhancing drugs had to overshadow last year's amazing story.

I have never cared about performance enhancing drugs. It was a shame about that though. He went 0-19 when the reporters started confronting him.
Join me, will you, to vow not to make reference of the phrase performancing enhancing drugs in 2008. In baseball, any reference of it is in the past anyway. There's testing for it now (except HGH), so let's move on.

There's testing, except for the stuff that there's not testing for, so we should just move on? How does that make any sense?

because until you can scientifically prove that steroids or HGH or amphetimines or whatever literally added HRs or strikeouts or even kept people playing the game longer, I don't care. Plus the allegations against Bonds, Clemens, et. al. are just that allegations. Do I believe they've done stuff, sure. But do I think there stats or ability is tainted, no. Please, seriously, let's move on.
And there is no real test for HGH or other designer PEDs. There's a blood test, but many of those aren't accurate. There was cheating/getting an advantage before Barry Bonds' era, there will be cheating/getting an advantage after it. There's always a way around things.

I still don't know how Boone kept his name out of the Mitchell Report. Dude was on roids, clearly. He was abnormally bigger and hit 40 HRs. Just like Brady Anderson. I have no idea how they didn't get implicated.

Your words. So steroids can help Bret Boone, but not Roger Clemens or Barry Bonds? That's a pretty precarious argument, no?
