NCAA hits new low with CBI

by Bret Sims 3/19/2008 9:50:00 AM

I thought the NIT trying to sue the NCAA Tournament was about as low as it could get in the NCAA.

I thought the NIT trying to offer money to the top teams to play in their tournament instead of the Big Dance might be it.

Now the NCAA goes and creates the Can't Be Invited (CBI) Tournament for teams that were too bad to even make the Not Invited Tournament (NIT)

Is it money and greed that is driving this or sheer stupidity?

UC's players should have told Mick Cronin they just want to go home.  There is no way I would play in that tournament.

My understanding is that the CBIT is not run by the NCAA. This is just a creation of a marketing group that runs the Coaches vs. Cancer events. Now, the NCAA isn't telling teams not to play in the tournament, but I don't think they have an active role in administering the event.

The Bearcats were quite excited about the game, if you believe what Mick Cronin told the Enquirer. Whether that's true, or why they would be excited in the first place, is a mystery to me.

Okay, I think the CBI is kind of a joke. Certainly not anything to get excited. I'm a Bearcat fan, but any tourney that invites a team with a losing record (like the Bearcats), but leaves a 20 win Wright State at home loses credibility in my book. BUT, if I were Mick, I would definitely not turn down the invite. BUT, if I were Mick, I would play my freshmen only plus John Williamson. Give them a small (very small) taste of playing in the postseason and prepare them for next year.
