Nuxhall doesn't make the Baseball Hall of Fame

by Bret Sims 2/20/2008 12:59:00 PM

Fans of Cincinnati Reds legend Joe Nuxhall will once again have to wait to see if the fan-favorite will make it into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that Seattle Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus has been named as the 2008 Ford C. Frick Award recipient.

Many people believed Nuxhall, who passed away on November 17 of last year would be the recipient due to the overwhelming support he has received.

In November, Nuxhall was the top vote-getter for the online fan poll to be on the 10-name ballot. Nuxhall received 82,304 votes. The next closest to Nuxhall had 7,659 votes.

I only have two questions. . .

1.  Will the geniuses get it right next year and vote Joe into the Hall of Fame where he belongs?

2.  How did the GSI baseball lovers not post this post?

Nuxhall is a legend and will be sorely miss. But he is color analyst from a small-market. Nuxie is fighting an up hill battle, but his memories will live in me and Reds fans everywhere for a long, long time.

Agreed with Dan. Those who just listen to Nuxie might not understand the charm of Nuxie, so he won't be a Hall of Famer in Coopestown, but his legend is beyond HOF status here in Cincinnati.
Now, the thing that just makes me mad about this process was the complete joke of the "fan vote". Nuxie broke a record for number of fan votes. I think Joe Morgan was second. Neither he nor Morgan were even considered nor was the guy who got third place. In other words, thanks for logging on, but it meant nothing to else other than generated false hope. Much like the holier than thou baseball writers, the Frick voters hold their noses up a little too high, clearly.

Bret, I think that a baseball lover did create the post. Deep down, anyway.

I don't think Nuxie ever gets in. This was his best shot.

To be fair, seven of the ten candidates are already selected; the fans get to pick the final three, which suggests that they weren't necessarily one of the best seven candidates. The voters are under no obligation to apply any weight based on the fans vote. It's not American Idol, the fans don't get to call all the shots.
