Good deal for Lewis, Browns

by Dan Clasgens 2/21/2008 10:39:00 PM

When the Cleveland Browns signed RB Jamal Lewis to a one-year deal last season they were hoping to fill a gap until they could find their "running back of the future".  On Thursday, Jamal Lewis became the team's future in the backfield as he signed a three-year deal to stay in Cleveland.

Lewis was set to become an unrestricted free agent next week. But the Browns, coming off of a 10-6 season in which they barely missed the playoffs, didn't want to risk losing a running back that amassed over 1,300 yards on the ground in the process.

After beinig cut last year by the Ravens, Lewis surprised many by turning a Pro-Bowl caliber performance in helping Cleveland back to respectability. He scored 9 of his 11 TD's over the team's last 10 games and had four 100-yard efforts over the season's last six contests. He was a big reason that the Browns nearly made the playoffs and at just 28 years he may just have a few more years left.

With an offensive line that has vastly been improved, talented and gifted receivers like Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslon along with mutliple options at quarterback in both Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn there is plenty to get excited about in Northern Ohio.

Yeah, except for living in Northern Ohio. If it's Brown, flush it down!

Seriously, I don't think I like this signing. I'm still not sold that Jamal Lewis is a long-term solution. Yes, he did good last year and yes everything you said about the O-line is true. But I've seen too many backs like Lewis get worse every year. But, I'm a Bengals fan, so I'm a fine one to talk about anything. I know I'd take Jamal over Rudi right now, and this time last year I wouldn't have said that.

Let me clear...I'm not a Browns' fan. However, you have to give them their props on last season. From the off-season and draft to the 16 games on the schedule, the organization had a remarkable run of success in '07.

There is no doubt that Lewis is a better option than Rudi Johnson right now. He is only 28 and had nearly two years of football completely wiped by injuries. He is a nice player for them to lock up for the next three years. The key is getting a backup plan ready in the meantime.

I like the move from the financial standpoint of the Browns. And you're right Dan, they have been lights out with the moves that have made going back to the last season's draft.

I just worry that 3 years may be too long, especially for a guy that has had 2 seasons down with injury.

2120 career carries isn't outrageous. He should be good for another season or two. The key for them is how much money is guaranteed, and how much is signing bonus vs. salary.
