GSI Mock Draft: Round 14

The decisions are getting tougher as we wrap up the fourteenth round of the Mock Draft. Some owners opt for the experience of a veteran while others are willing to roll the dice on some younger guys. We had a little bit of both in this round. Take a look:

The second team started the round with Corpas, its second reliever along with Papelbon. It may be too early of a pick for him but his numbers should improve as he did not start last year as the closer in Colorado. Also, this team will not need to worry much about relievers for the rest of the draft.

Team #1 took its first catcher in Pudge. His numbers will continue to dwindle as he finishes out his HOF career. But he should still put up a good batting average and pick up plenty of RBI in that lineup.

I love the Escobar pick. It seems like he has been around forever but he only turns 32 in April. He finished with an ERA under 4.00 in each of the last four years.

Bourn was a great pick too. If he plays well in the spring he should land the lead-off spot on a good Houston lineup. He'll steal a ton of bags and score a lot.

I felt pretty comfortable taking the chance on Escobar, given that I like the makeup of my staff so far (Haren, King Felix, Shields). He had some injury issues last year, so there's a little risk there; there were a couple safer picks I could have gone with.

The Bourn and Corpas picks are outstanding value for this late in the draft; Hardy was pretty solid as well. I'm not feeling the love for I-Rod this year, he's really slipping in his old age. Which is sad, since he's my age, and I remember very well when he jumped to the bigs.

It's hard not to go with a guy like Hardy who's in a lineup like the Brewers have. He'll be a good insurance policy if Tulowitzki gets a sophomore slump in him, and can be permanently slotted in the MI hole for great production.

I did consider taking Griffey here, but I assumed that by the time it came back around to me that both Hardy and Khalil Greene would be gone, leaving not much for my last MI slot. I can always fill in another OF or two later on.

I was banking on Ryan Garko falling to me at the end of the round, and only watched Todd Helton fall off the board last time! Greed cost me to fall to the end of the late first base run that goes after the big names are on the board. I will likely scramble for a 1B option to start the next round, but for the time being I decided to save face and go with my #4 starter.

With Erik Bedard, Matt Cain, and Francisco Liriano in the fold I have a rotation with some serious upside. Adding Phillip Hughes only adds fuel to the fire. Hughes may never be a true ace, but the kid has the solid make-up to be a solid No. 2 pitcher in this league and fantasy owners could be rewarded as soon as this season. Fifteen wins and an ERA under 4.00 is not out of the question and reports are he's throwing harder than ever as the Yankees break camp!

I thought about filling in my CM slot here, but I really like a particular prospect who has a guaranteed job coming into next season. I decided to take a risk and see if he would last into the next round (he did).

I had been looking at Hermida for the past couple of rounds, but decided he was still too big a risk v. reward candidate to take.

But here in the 14th round, it was late enough that I felt comfortable. Hermida was the top prospect back in 2006 and was destined for stardom. He's been derailed each of the past 2 seasons with injury.

If he can stay healthy (that's the risk part), then he should have a tremendous break-out year (high reward). With Cabrera gone from that lineup, it will be up to guys like Hermida, Uggla and Willingham to produce in the power/RBI slots.

The opportunity is there. He just has to stay on the field. This late in the draft it's a fine risk worth taking.
