Fantasy profile: Matt Holliday

In the first round at pick #7, I managed to get Matt Holliday. Value wise, this is a solid pick. By all accounts, Holliday is the #1 outfielder in all of baseball. Since this is a standard 5x5 league, Holliday is extremely valuable. Last year, Holliday hit a fantasy payload .340 BA (en route to winning the NL batting title), smacked 36 HRs, drove in 137 runs and scored 120 runs. He even swiped 11 SBs. That type of consistency is fantasy gold. He contributes in all five categories. Sure, you'd love to have his SB numbers be closer to the 20 range, but nobody is complaining about those numbers for their #1 OF, real or fantasy. And while it may seem as though Holliday came up out of nowhere last year, his 2006 season numbers indicate that these numbers should be expected from him for years to come. In the 2006 season, he hit .326 with 34 HRs and 114 RBIs. Holliday has a lifetime .317 batting average over three seasons. You don't get more statistically consistent than that.

So, looking beyond all of that, all signs point to Holliday being a force in the NL for many years to come. Holliday's age, 28, indicates that he may not even have hit his prime. He also plays for a young talented team that made it all the way (out of nowhere) to the World Series. That team, and lineup, remains intact which helps his value. And, of course, Holliday plays in the friendly confines of Coors Field where the ball still carries well. One could imagine that Holliday could be a 40+ HR guy if he wanted to forego his contact hitting. However, that's not how he, or his Rockie team mates play baseball. If you're griping that he's not hitting 40 HRs a year or stealing enough bases, I'd suggest you find another outfielder that is more consistent in every category than Holliday. You won't be able to find one.
