Palmer Thinks Change

by Chris Murdico 1/3/2008 2:20:00 AM

So earlier in the week Bengals' QB Carson Palmer tells the media that he thinks changes should be made to the coaching staff. He feels that a lot of changes need to be made. The fans have only been screaming that all season, not to mention for a few years now. Granted fans tend to overreact to anything and everything. But in this case, they and Palmer are right.

Normally I don't like players speaking out against their team or coaching staff. But in this case I think its great that Palmer came out and spoke his mind. While he's been a great QB ever since he took the reigns four years ago, Palmer has never truly exhibited a leadership quality that you'd expect from a starting QB, not to mention one of the best players in the game. This year was a frustrating one for the team as a whole as well as for Palmer. He may have set the single season franchise record for passing yards (4,131), but he also threw the most interceptions (20) in a season in his short career.

What was thought to be the year to get back to the playoffs, the Bengals didn't even finish at .500. While everyone points to the defense as the reason, the offense was out of sync most of the season as well. Making changes and making this team better has to start in the offseason. Palmer feels the same way. "We need to approach the offseason in a completely new way," he says. "We need to come back a rejuvenated team and a team on a mission."

There is no doubt changes need to be made to this team. It started today when the team let defensive coordinator, Chuck Bresnahan, and linebackers coach, Ricky Hunley, go. This will be the third time in five seasons under Marvin Lewis that the Bengals will be searching for a new defensive coordinator. The firing of Bresnahan wasn't a surprise, but letting Hunley go surprised me a little. While the defense was lackluster to say the least this season, the linebacker position was the one most decimated with injuries. At one point this season DE Robert Geathers had to fill in as linebacker due to injuries at the position. So it wasn't like Hunley had a strong core to work with.

Changes definitely need to be made even beyond letting Bresnahan and Hunley go. If you ask me I think offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski should be the next to get the boot. His offensive play-calling lacks imagination. He has one of the most potent offenses in the game at his disposal. The fact that they couldn't score more than 20 points in seven games this season says a lot when you have a great core of players on the offensive side of the ball. Granted its up to the players to execute the plays, but when the play calling is awful what can they do? Palmer can only audible so much before he comes off as disrespectful to his coach. And he's no Peyton Manning, at least not yet.

Great job speaking your mind Palmer. I just wish you had said more of what you were thinking. Even still, I'm glad to see you're speaking up and speaking out a little. You're supposed to be the leader of the team. After a season like this one, frustration is expected. Leaders emerge from these types of situations. Hopefully Palmer becomes just that. Now its time to make the changes and do something so the team isn't back in the same situation all over again next season.

Leaders can only be led by those that want to follow. As long as Chad Johnson is on the team, Carson will never be able to lead the ship.

That's very true. The biggest problem when it comes to Carson becoming a leader is that Chad is the face of the team. He may get more to "follow" him than Carson simply because of that fact.

Carson needs to take on the attitude that he's not going to take crap from anyone on the team, especially Chad. Get in these guys' faces, tell them to shut-up and play, and oh yeah, catch the damn ball when its thrown to you!

I agree with Carson stepping up to a point. He has to make it known that this is his team. But if he goes about it by getting up in Chad's grill, or refusing to throw him the ball, then you are asking for trouble.

Chad won't back down to that, and it will get ugly. Ultimately, that will expose Chad for what he truly is: a selfish, petulant player. It will probably lead to CJ being run out of town as well.

But the devisiveness that it will cause in the locker room will lead to another terrible season, in order for it to play out.

And if someething like that were to go down, don't look for "In Marvin We Trust" to get in the middle of it. He has proven that he takes a hands-off approach to Chad. He would just stand back and watch it happen.

Unless of course Chick Ludwig somehow gets involved. Then Marvin would step in. For some reason, he gets more snippy with Chick than with any other reporter in this city during press conference. I haven't figured out why.

Why is everyone FORCING this leadership issue on Carson? Because he's the QB? The QB operates the plays, but that doesn't necessarily mean he need to be lead in the locker room. That's like saying the only leader on a defense should be the MLB, cause he's the guy that announces the plays and calls the audibles. There are 10 other guys on the field that could easily step into a leadership role in locker room. The problem isn't with Carson, it's with the team dynamic as a whole.

TJ could emerge as the emotional leader, cheerleader-type that you guys seem all determined to have on team. Where's Greg Vaughn when you need him?

Hey, I'm not FORCING Carson to be the leader. It is Carson himself that has stepped up to the plate over the last two seasons and begun to make remarks in press conferences and the media that suggest he wants to be the spokesman for the team.

I never was one, as a fan, to force anyone into being a leader if they didn't want that role. Only after Carson has begun to try and step into that role has he himself opened himself to criticism.

I do believe however that has the man who makes the offense go on the field, you can't just be "one of the guys" and try to blend in. You have to step up and be out front. Many players that I have heard interviewed from the Texans said that the main reason why David Carr never worked out is because he never wanted to be "the guy" on the field. He just wanted to be "one of the guys" and a supporting cast member.

You don't get that treatment when you are the franchise QB. So on that level, I'm happy to see Carson stepping to the plate.

But I'm certainly not suggesting that he be the unquestioned leader off the field.

On almost every team in the league, the QB is the leader of the offense. And the defensive leader on every team seems to be the MLB...unless they're a rookie or new to their respective team. Peyton Manning is a leader. Ben Roethlisberger is a leader...or is trying to be one. Tony Romo is the leader in Dallas. Tom Brady for darn sure is the leader in New England. Ray Lewis is an aging leader. Shawn Merriman is a leader. Brian Urlacher...leader. Those are just a few examples.

The QB tends to be the face of the team. Therefore they're "forced" into that leadership role by the media and even more so, by the fans. The question is always whether or not they will step up into that role as the leader of the team. Carson has begun to, and that's nice to finally see!
