HOF class of 2008

by Jimmy Dinsmore 1/8/2008 3:26:00 PM
Goose Gossage was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame this year. After numerous times  of not getting enough votes, Gossage finally got enough votes to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Now, I have nothing against Goose. He's a fine closer. Really, really good. Not sure he's HOF material. The thing I'm just flabergasted at is how holier than thou baseball writers are. What exactly did Goose Gossage do from last year to this to warrant election? Did he throw some more saves? No. I hate the idea when they say he's not a first ballot hall of famer. Either you're worthy or you're not. Speaking of worthy . . . please someone explain how Davey Concepcion is not a Hall of Famer? His numbers are comparable if not better than Ozzie Smith. Davey C. had more homeruns, more RBIs and the same BA as Ozzie. He didn't do back flips. Please, spare me the attitude of it being the Hall of Fame when someone like Gossage is elected after numerous attempts, but Concepcion isn't. Gossage was good, really good, but not Hall of Fame good, in my opinion. Davey C. was the second the best shortstop at his position with World Series rings and should be in the Hall of Fame. Once again the righeous writers blew it. They also continue to disparage an innocent man by casting only 23% of votes for Mark McGwire. Whisper what you want, but how many drug tests for steroids did McGwire fail? How much hard proof is there against him? If they don't put McGwire in, then hopefully no one with any steroid connection will get in. Since they like to act holier than thou. Munch on this, no player has ever gotten a unanimous vote into the Hall of Fame by these people. No Jackie Robinson, no Babe Ruth, no Cal Ripken, no Cy Young.

I know I'm commenting on myself here, but I just went to Baseball Almanac and broke down Ozzie's numbers vs. Davey C.'s and also saw that Goose Gossage is 17th on the saves list. Lots of people ahead of him who aren't in the HOF. So, I assert again, Goose Gossage is a nice guy, nasty fastball, solid closer, not a Hall of Famer.
Now for the Davey C./Ozzie comparison:
100 hit difference between Ozzie and Davey (Ozzie has 2460 to 2326).
Davey has 101 HRs to 28, 950 RBIs to 793 and Davey's BA is .267 to Ozzie's .262. So, clearly Davey is a better overall offensive player. Then, I looked at their overall fielding percentage and found that Ozzie only had the edge by .08 career fielding percentage. So, the defensive difference is negligible. So why is Ozzie a HOFer and Davey isn't? I assert it's his glitz and glamour and the backflips. Note: I think Ozzie Smith is a HOFer, but I think Concepcion is too.

The voters felt compelled to have someone in the class this year so they put Gossage in, even though he's not even statistically in the top 15 in his one statistic. One could've said that Jim Rice might've been more worthy than Gossage if they had to have a candidate. I say it should've been Concepcion and McGwire.

As far as Ozzie, his fielding percentage was slightly superior, but his range factor (5.10) was far greater than Davey's (4.51), and getting to a ridiculous amount of balls was Ozzie's greatest strength in the field. Ozzie went to 15 All-Star games and won 13 Gold Gloves, compared to Davey's 9 and 5 respectively. Ozzie had 580 stolen bases and finished in the top 10 in the league 8 times, while Davey stole 321 with 3 top 10 finishes; that's part of the offensive game as well. Also, I'd say Alan Trammell is at least as deserving, probably more so, of induction to the Hall of Fame, so until he gets in it's really moot to worry about Davey. He's a very nice player, I'm just not buying that he's a HOF'er.

Goose, he should have been in a while ago. 125 two-inning saves speaks a lot more to me than a John Wetteland piling up 330 saves while averaging less than four outs per game. He was a game changer in his day, he finished in the top ten in saves 11 times, that's got to count for something. Rice, could have gone either way and it'd be hard to argue.

But don't you find it hypocritical to finally put someone in the Hall? What did Goose do this past season that he hadn't already done? Why haven't any players made it unanimously? The baseball writers are the biggest bunch of elites ever. They belong in the Hall of Shame. McGwire gained 2 votes this time around. Did 2 people change their mind about him? Will he eventually get in? His stats are obviously HOF material and that's all that matters to me.

I think the process gets a bit silly at times, I'd hardly call it hypocritical though. It is what it is, and it's not going to change any time soon. I have my issues with the BBWAA, who they let in to their group, and how they've adjusted to the changing journalistic landscape, but by and large they eventually get the inductions right. There's very few players in the HOF that I don't think should be there, and there's no more than a handful that aren't in that I think should be.
