A real severe punishment for Pats

by Jimmy Dinsmore 1/28/2008 7:04:00 AM
Looking over some mock drafts (what else do Bengals fans have to do right now) and I noticed that the freakin' Pats have the #7 pick from the 49ers. Are you kidding me? This is bogus. Commissioner Gordon (I know that's not his name) stripped the Pats of their first round pick (which will be #32) for "Spygate". But why can't he make this a real punishment by stripping them of ALL of their first round picks? How much punishment is it to lose the 32nd player when you're still going to land the 7th best player. Someone put out the bat signal we need someone to save us from this mess. Maybe Tagliabue isn't liking retirement. Goddell is trying to rival Bud Selig as professional sport's worst commissioner.

I believe it's a league rule that the commissioner can only strip a team of its own picks, and not picks that they acquired in a trade. Remember as well, at the time Goodell made his ruling, the 49ers were 2-0.

Apologies if this ends up being double posted, my original comment doesn't seem to be up here...

My understanding of the NFL rules is that the commissioner can only strip a team of their own pick, and not any picks that they received in trades with other teams (I believe this came up several years ago when Tagliabue stripped the Broncos of picks for salary cap violations). Had the 49ers not thought that Joe Staley was worth a #1 this year, or if they hadn't thought they'd be competing for a playoff spot in 2007, this might not have been an issue. But they can't just change the rules midstream; I have a feeling this one will be changed going forward, and future violators will feel the wrath of the league.
