A-10 needs to shut up and play ball

I am so sick of hearing all of the A-10 whine-bags out there claiming they aren't treated like a major conference. Guess what? You're not. You're a mid-major conference, having a good year. For years, they've been sunk by the likes of St. Bonaventure, La Salle and Duquesne being just bottom feeders and the rest of the conference being pretty good. This year, they have 4 ranked programs (Rhode Island, UMass, Dayton and Xavier). Those four teams are good with UD and X being able to beat any team on any given night. St. Joe's is always good for a scrap too. But I saw where Xavier AD Mike Bobinskie turned down an award for Drew Lavender as the mid-major player of the week because he didn't think they were a mid-major siting that they've played 11 "BCS" schools over the last two seasons. You know who plays 11 BCS schools every year, schools in the Big East, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 10 and ACC - the major conference schools. So please Phil Martelli, shove a suck in it. I love the  guy. He's a good coach and knows basketball but the A-10 is now and always will be a mid-major. Their success may fluctuate, but they won't ever be a major conference, or even possess a school that one can consider to be an elite program. Sorry. It's just not going to happen.

Ummm...what the heck does the BCS have to do with college basketball? That's all I'm wondering!

I can see Bobinski's position to a point. The whole designation of "mid-major" has become ESPN's lazy way of trying to pigeonhole schools. By their definition, Memphis is a mid-major. Really? Bet they'd take exception to that. Maybe breaking it down into single-bid vs. multiple-bid conferences might be a fairer classification. That said, it'd sure be nice if some of these "mid-majors" could make a deep run in the tournament, other than George Mason.

FWIW, I think X is going to get its wish and become a "major" school in a few years when the Big East fractures. They'll have a chance to hook up with plenty of the non-Division I-A schools from that conference.

Chris, I was using Bobinskie's words. He said BCS.
Adam, boy I don't think you and I agree on anything at all. The Big East is going to fracture? Really? And Xavier is going to be a major school? So you think you could ask the casual sports fan, what is Xavier University's mascot? Who is their head coach? What city are they located in? What's the name of their arena? And you think a majority of people would know any of those answers? No way. The point is, they're a small school with very little national following, no prominent national alums or anything. Xavier is the little engine that could. Good for them. It's not taking anything away from them. Just play basketball and quit worrying about labels. And yes, Memphis is stuck being a prominent school in a crap conference. I remember feeling like Xavier did when UC was in C-USA. I kept trying to justify how good and underrated C-USA was, but that was hogwash. It was and is awful. The A-10, generally speaking, is very mediocre. Not a major program among them and I DON'T see that changing.
And, I thought George Mason's Final Four run was one of the worst things ever. They were a joke. Just got hot at the right time. Nothing against them at all. They earned it, but they weren't one of the four best teams in the country then and they've fallen off the map now.

I guess you're right, that does suck when there's Cinderella teams that go deep into the tournament. I don't know why they even let those squads in.

We don't totally disagree here, I said above that it would help their case if they'd go deep into the tournament, because when they don't it hurts their credibility. As for the Big East, give it five more years and when the Seton Hall/Providence/Rutgers type crew starts coming in 11th every year, they're going to start splintering. I've been told this for about a year now by people in the know, it'll take a few years but it's going to happen.

Jimmy, I know you weren't bringing up the BCS when talking about college basketball...I was just saying that as a general question. To evven bring the BCS up when referring to college basketball is just stupid...last I checked, X doesn't havve a football team!

Adam, what do you mean by splintering? On the basketball side or football side? You mean they'll break up the 16 team conference?
