2008 Fantasy Football Draft: Round One

by Dan Clasgens 1/1/2008 11:06:00 PM

The playoffs haven't even begun yet and I am already thinking about next season. Fantasy drafts are going to be more interesting than ever.  I begin my five-part series on how I see the first four rounds shaking down, or at least the way it should if your league is not full of idiots. For the sake of argument let's assume it's a 12-team draft and a yardage+TD league:

ROUND ONE
1. LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, SD
- Still on top in my mind and another rushing title proves it; LT stays at the top

2. Brian Westbrook, RB, PHI - Durability tag is exaggerated a bit; One of the more consistent yardage producers

3. Adrian Peterson, RB, MIN - Nose dive at the end of the season scares me, especially if Tavaris Jackson returns at QB

4. Steven Jackson, RB, STL - Could easily be the steal of the draft; underrated after a injury-riddled 2007 season in St. Louis

5. Joseph Addai, RB, IND - Puzzled me at times this year, but his potential in the Colts' offense is far from being reached

6. Tom Brady, QB, NE - He may go earlier than this, but don't hold your breath on 50 TD's; I can't go QB in my top 5

7. Clinton Portis, RB, WAS - Many didn't notice, but Portis was a fantasy force at times this season and will be again next year

8. Randy Moss, WR, NE - Hands down the No. 1 wideout heading into next season, only 1st Round wideout on board

9. Larry Johnson, RB, KC - The biggest mystery of the first round; Brodie Croyle doesn't scare me as bad as the Lisfranc injury

10. Peyton Manning, QB, IND - The model of consistency. One of the few first round producers that can be counted on

11. Frank Gore, RB, SF - He's going to fall down in the draft, but not out of the first round; still has upside

12. Ronnie Brown, RB, MIA - It will be interesting to see how things shake down in Miami with Bill Parcells calling the shots

STAY TUNED FOR ROUND 2 - COMING SOON!

Dan,

Loving the new edit feature. Don't know if you did it on purpose, but you had some typo's in this one. So I went and edited it.

Now for my actual comment. You forgot about Reggie Wayne. I think he should be in the first round discussion. I would much rather have Wayne over either Gore or Brown.

Wayne has clearly become the No. 1 guy in Indy, even if Marvin H. returns. Gore isn't going to be a first-rounder next year. It appears that SF is going to retain Nolan, but are making him cut some of his coaches, and you have no idea if/what you will get from Smith. If they go with Smith next year, teams will load up on Gore because they have no fear whatsoever that Smith and the crap that poses for WR's in SF can beat them through the air.

Miami is a wait-and-see attitude for everyone. I wouldn't put any Dolphin in the first two rounds until things shake out more.

Keep ranking Brown low, guys, so that I can feel free to snag him earlier. Did anyone else witness his dominance in the first half of the season?

Oh, his injury? Well, isn't everyone one injury away from leaving the NFL?

I watched the 49ers closely over the past four games and still believe that team is better than their record indicates. I don't think it is a given that Alex Smith takes that job. Shaun Hill showed some promise and there is no telling what free agents they look at. Gore managed to gain over 1,500 total yards despite a horrible offensive line and shaky quarterback play. Assuming that the 49ers upgrade his supporting cast during the offseason, Gore figures to be undervalued heading into next year and remains a strong RB1.

Ronnie Brown was still has a ton of promise and will be the center piece of the Dolphins' offense next year and the team can only get better. Brown was hands down the top back in fantasy when he went down and I still value a RB1 over a WR1 in most cases.

Wayne will show up early in Round 2, but who am I to argue with the champ!

Fish, you just want another week six bye guy. You're still new in this fantasy football game. Let's keep your unorthodox drafting strategies to yourself, eh?

Now that I've had time to look up some numbers, here's why Wayne should NOT be drafted in the first round:

1. Marvin Harrison - Where did you get the idea that Wayne is the new number one in Indy? I don't know if you remember this or not, but Harrison was hurt pretty much all year. When he got banged up, he was number one. When he comes back he will still be number one. Wayne has had less yardage and less TDs than Harrison in the two seasons leading up to this one, and the reason he had more this year has been mentioned. Injury. When Harrison is back, Wayne's stats will taper off a bit.

2. Terrell Owens - Yes, he can be a head case. But T.O. has been 1st and 3rd in TD receptions in '06 and '07, respectively. This season, T.O. had only 155 yards less receiving than Wayne AND had 5 more TDs than Wayne. He also did this with 23 LESS receptions.

3. 'The Wide Receiver Paradox' - For some strange reason, WRs really took flight this year while 'stud' running backs declined a bit. With the whole history of fantasy football backing me, I really can't see this happening again in the near future, especially in back to back seasons. What does that mean? Put your RBs on a pedestal cause the good ones (Gore and Brown) are few and far between.

It really is all a moot point. There is too much that will happen between now and drafting day next season, so Gore and Brown may move up or down considerably between now and then.

Ben-Ro is obviously still bitter about the 12-1 regular season leading to a 1st round dumping. Lest I remind you Mr. Bolton, my "unorthodox" drafting strategies won me the Championship. I will be posting an entire blog on my drafting ability/inability later.

And frankly, I agreed with 1-10 on the list. So if you picking either 11th or 12th in a typical snake draft, you are going to be able to get Gore/Brown (if that is who you are still truly valuing at those slots) and a stud WR like Owens, Wayne, etc. basically back-to-back. Especially if you're choosing 12th.

Oh by the way, Wayne is younger and faster than Harrison. He will be the No. 1 in Indy next season, even with Marvin back.

And you may feel free to argue with me on that point, but I should remind you that I was right on Gore two seasons ago when most railed on me about that, I was right on Marshawn Lynch when I grabbed him higer than expected this season, and...

I am the CHAMP!

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember a little birdie telling you that Gore would be a stud last year. I don't know who that could have been...
