X-Report: Muskies Off To 5-0 Start

by Greg Shoemaker 11/24/2008 12:56:00 PM

The Xavier Musketeers have gotten off to a not so pretty but very impressive 5-0.  It’s not even December and XU can boast of wins over the Big12’s Missouri, the ACC’s Virginia Tech and #12 Memphis.  They are building a fine resume for the post-season. It is a pleasant surprise to see them winning with such holes to offensively.

The Musketeers are gutsy, they know how to win and their defense fuels their tenacity.  That is a testament to the leadership of their five returning lettermen.  The ingredients are their for mixing up another special season. There are still many question marks so lets take a look at the good and bad that we have seen from this cast of players so far.

CJ Anderson – Heart and soul of this team and will not be denied.  Must keep his cool and stay in close games because that is where the team needs him the most.

BJ Raymond – Musketeers can’t rely on him to bail them out every time they get behind because he is just too streaky a shooter.  They showed they have overcome that hurdle in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off as Raymond was just 3-15 from behind the arc.

Derrick Brown – Slowed by a sprained ankle he relied way to heavily on his jump shot in Peurto Rico.  If Holloway learns to throw him the alley-oop pass he will be back to his old ways.

Jason Love – Just a solid player.  He looks like one of the most improved players AGAIN on this roster.  Is showing that he is capable of hitting FT’s in the clutch.

Dante Jackson – The sophomore is still raw offensively.  Has great enthusiasm and brings it on defense.

Jamel MacLean – Great energy off the bench can score down low.  He will lose minutes if he can’t shoot free throws late in the game.

Kenny Frease – His shots were not falling in P.R.  but clearly has shown the tools to be one of the greats at the school.

Terrell Holloway – The point guard grew up in a hurry and did it under big time pressure with two 10-10 games at the foul line against Missouri & Memphis – what moxy.  It remains to be seen whether he can take the rigors of a full college season while running the show.

Brad Redford - a bit on the smallish side to earn extended minutes at this point.  He is a real shooting specialist and should slide right into that role with ease as the year wears on.

Mixed Reports On Palmer's Injury

by Dan Clasgens 11/24/2008 12:05:00 PM

According to SI.com's Peter King, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis believes Carson Palmer will not need postseason elbow surgery, and it's also quite likely that Palmer will play before the end of he year.

Kings writes about Palmer in his Monday QB, "I think most everyone missed a important tidbit about Carson Palmer last week -- most everyone but the faithful listeners to the "Opening Drive'' on Sirius NFL Radio. Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis believes Carson Palmer will not need postseason elbow surgery, and it's also quite likely that Palmer will play before the end of he year. I've heard people say, "Why risk Palmer's future?'' And they're right -- if there's any risk in injuring the elbow by playing, he shouldn't play. But if there isn't, he should. The other 52 players are playing each week, so why shouldn't their team leader play if he's healthy enough?"

This would be good news for Palmer, but don't expect it make a huge difference for the Bengals who have issues all over the ball. There was some speculation that the team's franchise quarterback may need Tommy John surgery, so if indeed surgery is no longer necessary there won't be nearly as much of a long-term impact.

However, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the quarterback is still singing a different tune. Palmer, who has been ruled out for Week 13, says the ligament and tendon in his elbow are detached from the bone. He is targeting Dec. 7 to resume throwing, and how the joint responds will likely determine further action. Palmer is out for the next two weeks. The Bengals face Washington in Week 15.

Imagine that Marvin Lewis singing a different tune than the quarterback himself, just another indicator of how poorly organized the Bengals' franchise really is.

King also made mention of Bengals' wideout Chad Ocho Cinco in his column.

"It's idiocy for the Bengals to consider bringing Chad Ocho Cinco back for the 2009 season. What's the point? That the Bengals will be able to puff their chests out and say, "Chad Johnson's not going to shoot his way off this team. No one is.'' Great. So you've proven a point. You can hold onto an ineffective player, and if he goes somewhere else, he could have a Randy Moss-like season in another uniform next year. Big deal. Johnson has been repentant since the incident in Pittsburgh, but so what? There will be another one soon, either before the end of this year or during the offseason. Just move on and cut ties. It'll be better for both parties."

The two draft picks that were offered up by the Redskins seem pretty good now, the Bengals will not be as lucky the next time around.

The Bearcat Blitz: Smells Like Oranges

by Chris Murdico 11/24/2008 8:14:00 AM

Tony Pike had a career night Saturday leading the No. 19 Cincinnati Bearcats (9-2, 5-1) to a 28-21 victory over the No. 20 Pittsburgh Panthers (7-2, 3-2). It was the first win for the Bearcats over the Panthers in eight tries in what has become known as the River City Rivalry, and it couldn't have come at a better time. With the win, Cincinnati is now firmly in the driver's seat to win the BIG EAST Conference title and earn a trip to the Orange Bowl.

The Bearcats have now knocked off three teams in the Top 25 in the last month or so. In addition to that, they have, for the first time in school history, secured all three of their rivalry trophies (Victory Bell from Miami (OH) rivalry, Keg of Nails from Louisville rivalry, River City Rivalry Trophy from Pittsburgh rivalry). The next trophy they're looking to add to their collection is the BIG EAST Conference trophy.

Pike threw three touchdowns to three different receivers Saturday night. He finished the game 26-for-32 for 309 yards. He ran the no-huddle, spread offense to near perfection and showed now ill effects of his broken non-throwing arm that he suffered earlier in the season.

The Bearcats fell behind early 7-0, but they wouldn't stay down or behind for long. Pike led Cincinnati on a 99-yard drive the first time they got the ball. The drive would end with a 20-yard hook-up with Marcus Barnett for a touchdown. From that point the Bearcats' defense took over and kept the Pittsburgh offense off the scoreboard. The Panthers were down 28-7 at one point before they made an attempt at a comeback.

Pittsburgh cut the lead to seven points with 1:22 left to play and then chaos ensued. The defense came up with a huge stop with what looked like the final play of the game and the students and fans rushed the field. The referees stopped them and pushed everyone back as they put four seconds back on the clock. And then chaos happened again.

It appeared that the Bearcats' defense had sacked Panthers' quarterback Bill Stull so the students rushed the field again. But Stull had gotten the ball away and the lateral-fest began, with fans on the field. Oranges were flying all over the place as well. The students turned around and ran back and then stormed the field one more time after the Bearcats recovered the ball on one of the lateral attempts. It was a crazy finish to an amazing night.

With the win, the Bearcats moved up to No. 16 in both the AP poll as well as the BCS rankings. They are one win away from winning the BIG EAST. If they beat Syracuse this coming Saturday afternoon, the BIG EAST title is their's and with that comes a berth in a BCS Bowl, most likely the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL.
