Around The NFL

by Dan Clasgens 11/14/2008 6:08:00 PM

Here are some of the latest headlines from around league heading into Week 11's action:

SAINTS RULE BUSH OUT
It's official, Reggie Bush will be out for Week 11's match-up with the Chiefs. He suffered a minor setback early in the week at practice as he attempts to recover from a MCL injury. Deuce McAllister will get the nod, with Pierre Thomas worked into the mix too. Bush should be back for Week 12's Monday night showdown with Packers.

BEARS EXPECTING ORTON BACK
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Kyle Orton announced after practice Friday that he will be probable for Sunday's game at Green Bay, meaning the Bears' quarterback will return to the starting lineup after missing one game with a right ankle injury. Orton worked with the first team again in the short practice at Halas Hall and will test out the ankle again Saturday in a brief walk-through before the team travels by bus to Green Bay.

RAMS WITHOUT JACKSON AGAIN
Steven Jackson sat out practice again Friday, is scheduled to see a specialist in St. Louis in an attempt to learn why his strained thigh muscle, suffered Oct. 19 vs. Dallas, isn’t responding to treatment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Antonio Pittman will start for the Rams in Week 11 as the team travels to San Francisco.

BACKFIELD DILEMMAS FOR BUCS
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers listed both Warrick Dunn (back) and Earnest Graham (Questionable) as questionable on the official injury report on Friday. It doesn't appear as if Cadillac Williams is going to come in just to the picture in Week 11. So expect Dunn to be the best bet for touches with Graham getting into the mix on a limited basis. Either way the Vikings' rushing defense is a tough task to handle.

PORTIS HOPEFUL, BUT UNLIKELY
Redskins' running back Clinton Portis (knee) missed practice for the third straight day on Friday, but remains hopeful that he could play against Dallas. Coach Jim Zorn said Portis's chances of playing are only "50-50," but Portis told the Washington Post that his knee has responded to treatment this week. "I've got two days left. I'll be in the training room working, trying to get there." Portis told the paper. Expect Ladell Betts to get the start for the Redskins on Sunday if Portis sits.

Mullet Gets Canned After 16 Games

by Adam Bartel 11/14/2008 5:47:00 PM

Barry Melrose, long-time hockey commentator for ESPN and owner of one of the greatest mullets currently in circulation, spent 13 years looking for the perfect coaching position to leave the broadcast booth for.  He thought he'd found that with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

And, just 16 games into that run, it's all over.

The Tampa Bay Lightning fired Barry Melrose after just 16 games in his return behind the bench, and associate coach Rick Tocchet will take over as interim head coach.

"This was a tough decision to make," general manager Brian Lawton said. "...[h]owever, the results were unacceptable and the players have to understand that we need to be better. Hopefully this change helps push them."

The Lightning entered the season with high expectations, but find themselves 4-5-1 the past 10 games, including three straight losses.

Look, I get that there's more pressure to win than ever with coaches salaries going sky high.  And I get that practically every NHL GM thinks they can coach better than the guy they already have.  But really, you hire a guy that hasn't coached in 13 years to take over a last place team, and you expected everything to be perfect less than a quarter of the way through his first season?  And a convicted criminal is going to do a better job?

Maybe Melrose is better off getting out of there.  If he's gotten the coaching bug out of his system, I'm sure that ESPN would love to hook him back up with John Buccigross, which would give them an excuse to jettison the dreadful Matthew Barnaby (hope you rented Matt, you cheap shot artist).

As testament to his character, here's a clip from his going away party from ESPN.  Even if you're not a hockey fan, I think we can all agree that this is the kind of reception we'd all like to receive from people we've worked with for years.

Indians' Lee Wins AL Cy Young

by Chris Murdico 11/14/2008 8:55:00 AM

A season removed from being demoted to the minors, Cleveland Indians' pitcher Cliff Lee was awarded the Cy Young for the American League yesterday. Lee received 24 of the 28 first place votes.

From the minors last season to receiving the grandest prize for a pitcher, Lee had one of the best seasons of any pitcher in quite some time. He finished the season with a 2.54 ERA and a 22-3 record, the best record in the majors.

Lee beat out the ace for the Toronto Blue Jays, Roy Halladay, who received the other four first place votes. Coming in third in voting was the Anaheim Angels' closer, Francisco Rodriguez, who set the record for most saves in a season this year.

Just two awards left to hand out.

NL Most Valuable Player - Monday, November 17th
AL Most Valuable Player - Tuesday, November 18th

Lineup Locks: Week 11

by Jimmy Dinsmore 11/14/2008 6:56:00 AM

Here is our Line-Up Locks for Week 11. Bye weeks are finally over and this week's games have a lot of great match ups. I only list three, but there are plenty of good options this week. Here's a quick look at those who have favorable matchups (LOCK IN) and those who deserve a spot on your bench this week (LOCK OUT):

QUARTERBACKS
Lock In:
--Matt Ryan vs. Den
My take: Ryan has performed like a veteran for the very underrated Atlanta Falcons. This week his match up is so good, you have to consider Ryan a top 10 QB this week. Expect a couple of scores and at least 200 yards from him.

--Donovan McNabb @ Cin
My take: McNabb should have time to shred the Bengals defense, and can still scramble away from any pressure the defense might put on him.

--Trent Edwards vs. Cle
My take: Edwards has been hot and cold but is poised for a very nice week in what could be an offensive shootout.

Lock Out:
--Chad Pennington vs. Oak
My take: Last week I hyped up Jake Delhomme to exploit the Deangelo Hall-less Raider secondary and that didn't happen. The Raiders are a mess on offense, but have actually overperformed on defense all year. I think the Dolphins will use a lot of Ronnie Brown this week in order to win the game.

--Eli Manning vs. Bal
My take: I think the Giants will win this game, but I don't think Eli does much to warrant a start this week.

--David Garrard vs. Ten
My take: The Jags have been a huge disappointment and with their season slipping away face one of the toughest defenses in the NFL. Until I see improvement from Jacksonville's o-line, I am leaving Garrard on the bench.

RUNNING BACKS
Lock In:
--DeAngelo Williams vs. Det
My take: I say start every Panther you can in this game, if possible as Detroit can't stop anything. It might be a shootout, but I think Williams could be the best of the scorers for Carolina this week.

--Tim Hightower @ Sea
My take: This year's rookie running backs has been a fruitful crop. Hightower is no different. While the Cardinals are a pass-first team, I think Hightower gets 100 yards and a score this week in what could be a closer game than some think.

--Marshawn Lynch vs. Cle
My take: Lynch has been a disappointment, but I think he comes back in a big way this week. As long as he gets 20 touches, he'll be good for 100 yards and a score.

Lock Out:
--Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Ten
My take: The Titans are the second best team in the NFL in rush defense. Factor in how bad the Jags o-line has been and I don't like MJD's chances this week.

--Earnest Graham vs. Min
My take: Several factors should keep Graham on the bench. Warrick Dunn is back from an injury, as is Cadillac Williams. Plus, Graham is gimpy and questionable with a bum knee and the Vikings are the #1 rush defense in the NFL.

--Justin Fargas @ Mia
My take: The match up isn't particular ominous for Fargas, but Darren McFadden is allegedly going to play this week and, in case you haven't been paying attention, the Raiders offense is atrocious. I would not start any Raiders at this point.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Lock In:
--Santana Moss vs. Dal
My take: Clinton Portis is likely not going to play, which means the Skins are going to have to air it out in order to beat the Cowboys and I think Moss will benefit from increased touches, especially in PPR leagues.

--Steve Smith vs. Det
My take: I realize that Smith and Delhomme had a great match up last week and were fairly disappointing, but this week, at home, versus a lousy Lions team, you can count on a great game from Smith.

--Roddy White vs. Den
My take: The Broncos can't stop anyone from scoring and moving down the field. The Falcons' offense is very good at home. And White has been one of the most consistent WRs in terms of production that no way you don't start him this week.

Lock Out:
--Vincent Jackson @ Pit
My take: This is a tough match up for the Chargers in general, and as a result, I think you can expect very little from Jackson this week.

--Bernard Berrian @ TB
My take: I have said several times in this column how underrated the Tampa defense is and for this reason, I think it will be a low-scoring affair. Berrian is a borderline starter every week, but not this week.

--Marvin Harrison vs. Hou
My take: He's a Hall of Famer, for sure, but he isn't that Hall of Fame talent any more. I don't think Harrison warrants a start in anyone's lineups now that bye weeks are over.

TIGHT ENDS
Lock In:
--Chris Cooley vs. Dal
My take:  As mentioned, without Portis, Jason Campbell will look to Cooley often as a safety valve.

--Owen Daniels @ Ind
My take: Daniels is a fantasy stud and gets a great match up this week.

--Kellen Winslow @ Buf
My take: He was targeted 11 times last week by new QB Brady Quinn and put up over 100 yards and a score. Expect nice numbers again this week from Winslow.

Lock Out:
--Greg Olsen @ GB
My take: The Packer secondary is very good and so are their linebackers. I'm not confident in anyone on the Bears defense this week.

--Todd Heap @ NYG
My take: Yes that was Todd Heap in the end zone last week, but don't get too excited and do something foolish like start him.

--Kevin Boss vs. Bal
My take: And yes that was Kevin Boss in the end zone last week, but again, don't do anything foolish like start him.

TEAM DEFENSE/ST
Lock In:
--Carolina vs.Det
--NYG vs. Bal
--Phi @ Cin

Lock Out:
--Buf vs. Cle
--Atlanta vs. Den
--Was vs. Dal
