Game Balls: Week 10

by Jim Humbert 11/9/2008 7:36:00 PM

Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota - 30 carries, 192 yards, 1 TD, 3 catches, 33 yards
The Vikings running back entered the game against the Packers trailing Clinton Portis by 172 rushing yards for the league lead. He finished the day on top as the first back to reach 1,000 yards this season. Peterson's biggest carry was his last as he ran for 29 yards to score the game winning touchdown. The win puts the Vikings in a tie with Chicago for the NFC North title and puts Peterson in the race for league MVP.

Thomas Jones, RB, NY Jets - 26 carries, 149 yards, 3 TD
Jones and the Jets took advantage of a very bad St. Louis defense on Sunday by scoring 40 points in the first half. Brett Favre did not need to do much with Jones' performance and threw for just 167 yards with a touchdown and no (that's right, zero) interceptions. Dustin Keller caught 107 yards on six passes and scored the touchdown. But the day truly belonged to Jones who now has nine touchdowns this season after scoring just once all of last year.

Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans - 7 catches, 140 yards
If you look just at the numbers then it would appear that if any member of the Saints got a game ball it would be Drew Brees. He threw for 422 yards and two scores. But he also had three interceptions and one of his touchdowns was a 32 yard 'Hail Mary' at the end of the game. Sure, it counts for a good fantasy score but New Orleans still got spanked by the Falcons and Brees should get his share of the blame. Regardless, it was nice to see Colston have a big game.

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville - 11 carries, 70 yards, 3 TD
After a couple of bad weeks the Jaguars finally put together their 'A' game to beat the Lions. Of course most teams don't need their 'A' to beat the Detroit but after losses to the Bengals and Browns, Jacksonville fans were really starting to worry. Nonetheless MJD made the most of his opportunities against a weak defense. Fred Taylor out-ran Jones-Drew by ten yards but never found the end-zone. David Garrard also had a good game with 238 passing yards and two scores.

Benjarvus Green-Ellis, RB, New England - 26 carries, 105 yards, 1 TD
The biggest surprise here isn't so much that Green-Ellis had a good game - he's a talented back. The real shock is that a single running back for the Patriots was actually given the ball 26 times. I haven't had time to do the full research, but it looks like the most carries for any one back this year was 16 by Sammy Morris. I don't think anyone carried the ball more than 26 times for the Pats since Corey Dillon. Times may be changing in New England without Tom Brady and BGE looks like the real thing. But don't be surprised if next week he's one of three guys who gets the ball eight times.

Reggie Wayne, WR, Indianapolis - 6 catches, 114 yards, 1 TD
In one play against the Steelers, Wayne matched his receiving total from last week. In this one game he nearly matches his total from the previous three. To say that Wayne and the Colts offense has been struggling is an understatement. But they may just be getting started with a big win in the Steel City. Peyton Manning threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Seven different receivers caught a pass and three different guys scored. The running game did not do much but few have been able to get very far against the Steelers. The Colts aren't going to win their division but they are getting on track for the Wild Card. Look out.

Tyler Thigpen, QB, Kansas City - 27/41, 266 yards, 3 TD
So the Chiefs have only one win on the season - don't blame Tyler Thigpen. In his last three starts the young QB has thrown for 710 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. On Sunday against the Chargers he drove his team in the fourth quarter only to lose the game on a missed 2-point conversion. He hooked up with Tony Gonzalez 10 times for 110 yards and two of those scores. Third year wide receiver Mark Bradley had the other score and finished with 81 yards on nine catches. If the Chiefs actually had a running back this team may be talking about a win streak instead of another close loss.

The Game Used Sock Award
Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina - 7/27, 72 yards, 1 TD, 4 Int

If not for DeAngelo Williams the Panthers might have lost to the hapless Raiders on Sunday. Williams ran for 140 yards and a touchdown including a 69 yards run. He was the only offense. Delhomme did all he could to give away the game. Seriously, seven complete passes? Or, well, 11 if you count the picks. And his one touchdown was just a three yard pass to Muhsin Muhammad. Heck, that should have been a run by Williams! Sure, the Panthers still won the game and head back home leading the NFC South. But Delhomme should have to wear his rotten socks on the plane - and sit alone.

Week 11: Alabama, Texas Tech Pull Away

by Chris Murdico 11/9/2008 3:08:00 PM

This weekend the top two teams in the country separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Alabama won a tough game over LSU on the road, 27-21. Texas Tech dominated a good Oklahoma State team, defeating them 56-20. Both teams moved to 10-0. Alabama got 44 first place votes and Texas Tech got 21 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. They are the only two teams to receive first place votes this week as the votes were split between four teams last week.

The team that took the biggest hit this week was Penn State. Their last second loss to Iowa dropped them from third to seventh in the polls. While that's not a very far fall, their shot at the national title are pretty much done unless a lot of things happen to help them out.

The teams that benefit the most from Penn State's loss are Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, and USC. They all moved up one spot in the rankings because of the Nittany Lion's loss.

Bouncing from the Top 25 are four teams; West Virginia, Califnornia, Georgia Tech and Maryland. With four leaving, four have to enter. Cincinnati moves into the Top 25 for the first time this year after beating two Top 25 teams in back-to-back games. They come in at 22 followed by three teams returning to the rankings; Oregon State, South Carolina and Tulsa.

Below is the complete list of the AP Top 25:

  1. Alabama 10-0
  2. Texas Tech 10-0
  3. Florida 8-1
  4. Texas 9-1
  5. Oklahoma 9-1
  6. USC 8-1
  7. Penn Sate 9-1
  8. Utah 10-0
  9. Boise State 9-0
  10. Ohio State 8-2
  11. Oklahoma State 8-2
  12. Missouri 8-2
  13. Georgia 8-2
  14. Ball State 9-0
  15. TCU 9-2
  16. BYU 9-1
  17. North Carolina 7-2
  18. Michigan State 9-2
  19. LSU 6-3
  20. Florida State 7-2
  21. Pittsburgh 7-2
  22. Cincinnati 7-2
  23. Oregon State 6-3
  24. South Carolina 7-3
  25. Tulsa 8-1

The Bearcat Blitz: A Win That Almost Wasn't

by Chris Murdico 11/9/2008 2:39:00 PM

It took overtime for the Cincinnati Bearcats (7-2, 3-1) to take down the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-3, 3-1), 26-23. It was an overtime that should have never happened. UC was up 20-7 throughout the entire second half only to allow WVU to fight their way back into the game and force overtime.

UC won the toss for overtime and went on defense first. The Bearcat defense stepped up and kept the Mountaineers out of the endzone, forcing them to kick a field goal. On the Bearcats possession, Tony Pike would hit Dominick Goodman for a 10-yard gain and a roughing the passer penalty later, the Bearcats were sitting at the 7 1/2 yard line.

A 5-yard run by Jacob Ramsey would set up the game winning score. The Bearcats would line up in the Power-I formation. Pike faked the handoff and flipped the ball to an open Kazeem Ali for the game winning touchdown.

Just when it looked like the Bearcats were going to pull one of the biggest victories in the history of the program, a string of unexpected events took place. With about four minutes left and with the Mountaineers driving inside the 10-yard line, Pat White threw an interception.

UC was unable to move the ball and rather than having punter Kevin Huber punt from his own endzone, he ran out of the endzone, giving WVU two points, making the score 20-9. There was 1:11 left in the game at that point.

The WVU offense needed just seven plays to score on a 3-yard pass from White to Dorrell Jalloh with 19 seconds left in the game. Then the unthinkable happened. As expected, WVU kicked an onside kick that looked like UC would recover until two players jumped for the ball at the same time and bumped into each other; neither of them caught the ball. Instead it was recovered by Mortty Ivy of WVU. That set up a 52-yard field goal from Pat McAfee as time ran out.

The Bearcat defense played in the prevent most of the fourth quarter. It was doing that and not pressuing White that ended up almost costing them the game. The offense didn't score a single point in the second half, but the defense, until the last 1:11, played well enough to keep the powerful Mountaineer offense at bay.

White and runningback Noel Divine were held in check all night, only managing 99 yards combined, 90 yards below their average. That's exactly what UC needed to do in order to come away with a victory.

While the game should have never made it to overtime, a win is a win. This win in particular is quite possibly the biggest in the history of UC football. Why? Because this win puts the Bearcats in the driver's seat in the BIG EAST and the chance to play in a BCS bowl game.

Pike is showing no ill effects of his broken non-throwing arm, so those worries can now be put to rest. He finished the game 16-for-30 for 178 yards. Because of the strong play from the defense throughout most of the game, Pike wasn't called on to do too much. Dustin Grutza still isn't fully healed from the broken leg he suffered in the second game of the season against Oklahoma. Fortunately for the Bearcats, Pike has come back strong in his last two starts to show that he can lead this team.

This was the second win in a row over a Top 25 for the Bearcats after having defeated South Florida last week 24-10. With that, the Bearcats are now in the top 25, ranked No. 22. The next two games are crucial for UC. They travel to Louisville this coming Friday night followed by what could be the biggest home game in school history against Pittsburgh the following week. Wins in both of these games could very well mean a BIG EAST title along with a BCS bowl berth.
