AL Gold Glove Awards, Another First for Rays

by Chris Murdico 11/6/2008 10:55:00 PM

Yesterday the National League Gold Glove awards were given out. Today it was the American League's turn. Among the most notable of the recipients is the Tampa Bay Rays' first baseman, Carlos Pena.

Pena becomes the first player for the Rays to win a Gold Glove. This just caps off a great season for the Rays who not only went from worst to first in the AL East, but also made the World Series, losing in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies. Pena has become known as one of the better homerun hitters in the league, and now he's being recognized for what he does in the field.

In addition to Pena, Texas Rangers' shortstop Michael Young, Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and Minnesota Twins' catcher Joe Mauer won the first Gold Glove of their career.

The awards for the outfield were repeats from last year with Los Angeles Angels' Torii Hunter and Seattle Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki winning a Gold Glove for an eighth straight year and the Cleveland Indians' Grady Sizemore winning his second consecutive award.

Hunter has not made an error since August 31, 2007. He definitely has a flair for the dramatic as he is nicknamed "Spiderman" for the way he climbs the wall in any stadium. The record for Gold Gloves by an outfielder is 10, held by Ken Griffey Jr. and Al Kaline. There's a pretty good chance Hunter and maybe even Ichiro, will break that record, possibly within the next three years if they keep taking the award home year after year as they have been.

The only team in the AL with multiple winners, surprisingly, were the Mariners as Adrian Beltre received the award for the second straight season.

New York Yankees' pitcher Mike Mussina won 20 games this past season for the first time in his career. Now he can add his seventh Gold Glove to his collection of awards.

The awards for Rookie of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Cy Young, and Most Valuable Player will be released over the next week or so.

1530 Homer Show Notes

by Dan Clasgens 11/6/2008 4:42:00 PM

Did you miss this week's Fantasy Playbook as I go on with Lance McAlister on 1530 Homer the Sports Animal? Either way here's my notes from the show...

TREND OR MIRAGE
QB Kurt Warner (back-to-back 300 yard games) – TREND – With Anquan Boldin healthy and the team’s running game taking off behind Tim Hightower, Warner is going to keep on rolling. He not only is putting up huge yardage numbers, but has thrown for multiple scores in seven straight games.

RB Joseph Addai (17 carries, 32 RuYd in return last week) – MIRAGE – He may struggle this week vs. PIT, but after that Addai gets Houston, San Diego, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Detroit – all favorable match-ups. If he stays healthy Addai should deliver down the stretch.

WR Chad Ocho Cinco (2 TD’s last week) – MIRAGE – You just don’t know when the touchdowns are going to come and despite the scores he still managed only 37 yards and has yet to hit the 60-yard mark in a game this season. Match-ups ahead with the Eagles, Steelers, Ravens, Colts, and Redskins, I don’t see him being productive.

WR Andre Johnson (36 for 524 yards in past 4 games) – TREND – Don’t let the move to Sage Rosenfels worry you too much. Johnson is going to continue to produce. Over the past four weeks he 50 targets, 15 more than the next closest receiver. The schedule ahead is not great for him, but he has the talent to overcome it.QB Eli Manning (0 200+-yard games, 3 TDs, 3 INTs over last 3) – MIRAGE – He’s struggled a bit of late, but he has tossed a TD in each of those games and will prove worthy down the stretch.

INJURY REPORT
Matt Schaub (MCL) – out 2-4 weeks after suffering his third major injury in his two years as a Texan. Sage Rosenfels replaces Schaub and has shown he’s capable of putting up solid fantasy numbers. If you need a quick fix at QB take a stab with him.

Kyle Orton (ankle) – Originally thought to be out for a month, it now appears the Bears’ quarterback’s ankle injury is not as serious as originally diagnosed. He could be back next week.

Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder) – Will likely be a game-time decision, don't count on him. Bryon Leftwich gets the nod should Big Ben sit, but you can find a better QB this week.

BYE WEEKS
Cincinnati, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Washington

VALUE PACK
QB – Matt Ryan (vs. NO): In his last four games, Ryan has thrown for close to 1000 yards and seven touchdowns while only throwing three interceptions. He should be a good bet for 200+ yards and at least 1 TD vs. the Saints who give up over 11 points per game to fantasy quarterbacks.

RB – Tim Hightower (@SF): The 49ers have allowed nearly 180 total yards per contest to opposing backs in the past month. They've also allowed roughly 2 TD’s per game to the position during that span. Hightower has replaced Edgerrin James as the Cards’ starter and should have a huge game on Monday night.

WR – Derrick Mason (@Hou): The veteran has pulled in at least five balls in five of the past six games and benefits from playing a Texans’ team that has proven to be vulnerable to the big play.

TE – Kevin Boss (@Phi): He has more than doubled his season reception total over the past two weeks and reached the end zone in each game. Now he gets the Eagles D’.  Only six team have ceded more fantasy points to tight ends and that makes Boss a good Week 10 option.

DEF – Dolphins (vs. Sea): Outside of a fluke performance in San Fran two weeks ago, the Seahawks’ offense hasn’t scored double-digits on the road all season and are making the longest road trip possible in the league as they travel from Seattle to Miami. The Dolphins’ young D has created sacks and turnovers and makes for a sneaky play here.

The Bearcat Blitz: West Virginia Pregame

by Chris Murdico 11/6/2008 10:44:00 AM

The BIG EAST conference title could very well be on the line this week when the Cincinnati Bearcats (6-2, 2-1 BIG EAST) travel to Morgantown to take on the 20th ranked team in the country, the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-2, 3-0 BIG EAST). The winner of this game would be in the driver's seat heading into the stretch run of the season.

The Bearcats are coming off an impressive 24-10 victory over South Florida. In that game, quarterback Tony Pike returned to form, showing no ill effects of his broken non-throwing arm. In addition to Pike looking great, the UC defense stepped up and shut down USF's quarterback, Matt Grothe, forcing him to throw three picks. UC was coming off a disappointing loss to UCONN the week before where they gave up 40 points. Giving up only 10 points to a good scoring offense like USF speaks volumes for the Bearcats' defense returning to form.

West Virginia looked like they were in trouble last week against UCONN, and then Pat White and Noel Divine took over the game. The Mountaineers ended up coming from behind early to thump the Huskies, 35-13. WVU's running game is what defines their offense. White is averaging 5.3 yards a carry while Divine is averaging 6.9 per carry. If the Bearcats want to stand any chance of leaving Morgantown with a win, they'll have to keep both White and Divine in check.

The Bearcats have been wreaking havoc on opposing quarterbacks lately, lead by defensive end Conner Barwin. The team has recorded 12 sacks in their last five games after getting just three in their first three games. Barwin leads the team and the BIG EAST with seven sacks which also has him ranked 13th in the country. There's a good chance the defense will be able to keep the passing game at bay, but its White's skills as a runner that will cause problems. Look for head coach Brian Kelly to possibly use one of his linebackers, possibly Ryan Manalac, as a spy on White.

West Virginia holds a 14-1-1 record over Cincinnati with the only Bearcats victory coming in 2003.  UC gave WVU a run for their money last season in Nippert Stadium as the Mountaineers held on to win 28-23.

The Bearcats will need Pike to be sharp and protect the ball on Saturday night. Pike will no doubt be looking to hook up with his favorite target, Mardy Gilyard. If he can hit Dominick Goodman for a score he would tie Jim O'Brien for UC's all-time leader in receiving touchdowns with 21.

The BIG EAST championship means a trip to a BCS bowl game. The Bearcats could do a lot for their program with a win this weekend. The game starts at 7:00 pm on ESPNU.

Lineup Locks: Week 10

by Jimmy Dinsmore 11/6/2008 6:52:00 AM

Here is an early edition of Line-Up Locks for Week 10. Remember, there's a game tonight between the Browns and the Broncos, so set your lineups early, if necessary. Here's a quick look at those who have favorable matchups (LOCK IN) and those who deserve a spot on your bench this week (LOCK OUT):

QUARTERBACKS
Lock In:
--Phillip Rivers vs. KC
My take: Rivers is quietly one of the most consistent QBs in all of fantasy football. This week he gets a nice match up and could exploit the Chiefs defense for a couple of scores.

--Matt Ryan vs. NO
My take: The NFL's clear-cut favorite to win Rookie of the Year is Matt Ryan, and deservedly so. Ryan has looked like a savvy veteran and will get a chance to show off his skills at home against a bad New Orleans defense. Ryan is a much better QB at home than on the road. This is the week to use him if you have him.

--Jake Delhomme @ Oak
My take: This is usually the time of the year when Delhomme and Steve Smith get hot and that's exactly what's happening. Look for a couple scores from Jake this week, especially because, inexplicably Al Davis cut Deangelo Hall this week, further weakening the Raiders defense.

Lock Out:
--Donovan McNabb vs. NYG
My take: McNabb has put up very nice numbers all year, so why is he on this part of the list? Well, the Giants defense is ferocious and even a scrambler like McNabb will face intense pressure. This will lead to less production and more turnovers from him. He might still be your best QB, but if you have someone like Matt Ryan behind him, then move him to the bench for this week.

--Sage Rosenfels vs. Bal
My take: The waiver wire du jour should not be played this week. I know that the Texans passing game has impressed, but I just think they run better with Scaub under center and will face a Ravens defense that is still very tough.

--Brady Quinn vs. Den
My take: It's very tempting to put Quinn in this week, I know. The match up is ideal (Denver's defense is easy to score on). But, Quinn has had little to no time in practice to work with the first team. Since this is a Thursday game, he's had two days in fact. That's what scares me. Take a wait and see approach with Quinn.

RUNNING BACKS
Lock In:
--Jamaal Charles @ SD
My take: Charles showed who's really in charge in the Chiefs backfield now. With LJ not playing again this week, expect a repeat performance of 100+ yards and a score from Charles this week.

--Maurice Jones-Drew @ Det
My take: MJD was in this same spot last week and disappointed against the Bengals of all teams. I'll chalk that up to a fluke, but if he can't put up good stats versus the Lions, then it's officially time to worry about him.

--Jamal Lewis vs. Den
My take: Get Lewis in your lineup for tonight's game. The Broncos defense is terrible and Romeo Crennel will try to run the ball a lot to take some pressure off Brady Quinn.

Lock Out:
--Stephen Jackson @ NYJ
My take: S-Jax didn't practice yesterday and Coach Haslett said that if Jackson can't practice fully, he won't play this week. Plus, I'm putting Jackson on this list out of spite becaus those of us who own him are probably coming off losses thanks to the egg he laid last week. Until he shows he's healthy, I'm benching him.

--Ryan Grant @ Min
My take: Grant has been a huge disappointment this season. He's yet to produce big, consistent numbers and has a tough match up this week.

--Joseph Addai @ Pit
My take: Addai can also be considered a huge disappointment this year and like Grant, faces a tough match up this week.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Lock In:
--Brandon Marshall @ Cle
My take: The Broncos could really light up the scoreboard tonight and Marshall should see plenty of catches and scoring chances against a very bad Browns secondary.

--Steve Smith @ Oak
My take: As mentioned, this is usually when Smith starts to find his groove and he's coming off a two TD performance last week. No Deangelo Hall on him means plenty of open routes for Smith.

--Marques Colston @ Atl
My take: The Saints miss Reggie Bush. As a result, they have to throw it a lot more and Colston will benefit from what could be a shootout.

Lock Out:
--Desean Jackson vs. NYG
My take: As rookies tend to do, Jackson has faded as the season has worn on. This week will be no exception, keep him out until he shows flashes like he did early in the year.

--Devin Hester vs. Ten
My take: I have never been sold on Hester as a viable fantasy WR (yet). Many seem to still start him. With potentially a new QB under center and going against the NFL's best defense, why would you start him this week?

--Donnie Avery @ NYJ
My take: I go and put this guy in as a lock-in last week saying he's finally convinced me and what does he do but lay an egg? So, I am back to believing that if you can't score versus the Cardinals on your own home turf, then you don't deserve a start this week on the road against the Jets.

TIGHT ENDS
Lock In:
--Antonio Gates vs. KC
My take:  Not that you were going to bench him anyway, but this could be a huge week for Gates.

--Owen Daniels vs. Bal
My take: It's a tough match up, yes, but Daniels has proven that he's an every week starter regardless

--Kellen Winslow vs. Den
My take: Winslow loves the national spotlight and will get some soft coverage to exploit tonight. He allegdly liked the move to Brady Quinn, so let's see if that increases his targets.

Lock Out:
--Kevin Boss @ Phi
My take: This guy is too inconsistent to be counted on as a fantasy starter. This week it's a bad match up, too.

--Tony Scheffler @ Cle
My take: Again, until he proves he's back and can produce numbers for you, don't risk starting him.

--Zach Miller vs. Car
My take: He is in the top 5 of receiving yards for tight ends, but he has only one TD. I would expect no scores and limited yardage this week.

TEAM DEFENSE/ST
Lock In:
--Carolina @ Oak
--Miami vs. Sea
--Jacksonville @ Det

Lock Out:
--San Francisco @ Ariz

--Atlanta vs. NO
--New England vs. Buf
