Fraud is Exposed

by Jeff Pugh 10/5/2008 10:47:00 PM

No sorry ... I'm not talking about the plan Mike Brown has been implementing since he took over in 1990. That's been well covered and well documented. No, I'm talking about the so-called MMA fighter Kimbo Slice.

While I was disappointed not to see an awful Ken Shamrock fight him and most likely destroy him, I was happy to see an very average at best journeyman fighter, Seth Petruzelli, only need less than a minute to dispose of the fraud that was Kimbo Slice.

Sorry I've been away from the boards for a while. I'll make some UFC and other MMA posts soon enough. And the Bengals still blow. But hey ... I'm going 3-0 this week in my Fantasy leagues.

...more from MMAJunkie.com

"Seth Petruzelli wasn't the only big winner on the third edition of CBS EliteXC "Saturday Night Fights." Affliction Entertainment scored in its first attempt at cross-promotion and emerged from one of the most fascinating nights in the history of MMA having raised the profile of its brand.

In the near term, Petruzelli's eleventh-hour decision to scrap his fight with Aaron Rosa and stomp Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson in less time than it takes to order a pint at the pub will be all the buzz. However, from a business perspective, Affliction was the clear winner Saturday night.

It took Andrei Arlovski a round to get his motor running, but the former UFC heavyweight champion clobbered Roy Nelson inside the distance. That solid KO performance, coupled with Slice's meltdown, meant Affliction ended the night with the best heavyweight on the card."

Game Balls: Week 5

by Jim Humbert 10/5/2008 6:48:00 PM
Clinton Portis, RB, Washington - 29 carries, 145 yards, 1 TD
Heading into the game on Sunday Portis did not have a very good history against the Eagles. Well, history did not repeat itself. The Redskins running back led his team to another huge victory on the road. Last week his team won in Dallas and today they did it in Philly. Of course, he was not alone out there. Jason Campbell played mistake-free. Chris Cooley caught eight passes for 109 yards including a touchdown from Antwan Randle El. And the Washington defense held the Eagles to just one touchdown and one field goal.

DeAngelo Williams, RB, Carolina - 20 carries, 123 yards, 2 TD, 1 rec TD
On Sunday Williams cleaned up against what appeared to be more of a practice squad than an NFL team. He was not alone as his rookie teammate Jonathan Stewart had 72 yards on 19 carries against the Chiefs. Steve Smith was also back in form with 96 yards on six catches. And of course the defense gets plenty of credit for shutting out Kansas City - something very rare in the NFL. But it was just Kansas City.

Kyle Orton, QB, Chicago - 24/34, 334 yards, 2 TD
While it could be argued that no one should get a Game Ball when playing against the Lions, those are some pretty good numbers for a pretty average quarterback. What's more impressive is that Orton connected with seven different receivers. Rashied Davis led the team with six catches and 97 yards but Greg Olsen was right behind him with 87. Devin Hester and Matt Forte each caught a touchdown pass and Forte ran for another.

Roddy White, WR, Atlanta - 8 catches, 132 yards, 1 TD

The second-year receiver for the Falcons now has two 100+ yard games this season after posting 90 last week. Not only is he for real, the Falcons are too. Everyone already knows they can run the ball and Michael Turner went for 121 yards against the Packers. And their defense came up with plays when they needed to in Green Bay. Many may still not believe in the Falcons - including me - but the fact is they are now 3 and 2 in shaky division.

Ronnie Brown, RB, Miami - 24 carries, 125 yards, 1 TD
Wouldn't it be nice if Brown were eligible at quarterback? He takes almost as many snaps as Chad Pennington. If fantasy baseball rules were appiled he should be eligible at the position. (This is not the first time I have thought of this. I've had LT in a keeper league for years.) Either way, Brown did not throw a touchdown pass against the Chargers. But he did show that their new 'wildcat' formation was not just a one-game fluke. And it has now been successful against the Patriots and the Chargers. Don't be surprised to see it again next week.

Matt Cassel, QB, New England - 22/32, 259 yards, 1 TD, 2 Int
After an embarrassing loss in their last game to the Dolphins, Cassel had to show some signs that he can hold his own in the NFL. And while he did nopt exactly shine against the 49ers, he played well enough to win the game. He connected with Randy Moss on a deep touchdown pass. And he found Wes Welker eight times for 73 yards. Sure, he is no Tom Brady but at least with Cassel taking the snaps the Patriots season is not lost.

The Game Used Sock Award
Larry Johnson, RB, Kansas City - 7 carries, 2 yards
I'm getting tired of writing about this guy. Seriously, 198 yards one week and 2 the next? TWO? Yes, the Panthers are good and the Chief stinks and it's always easier to play at home than on the road. BUT TWO YARDS?!?! Heck, Nick Goings had 10 yards on the same number of carries for the Panthers. At this point there is no way to predict what LJ is going to do each week. The only thing for sure is that the Chiefs will lose and Johnson goes home with a pair of stinky, rotten, fungi-filled socks!

It Must Suck To Be A Cubs Fan

by Greg Simons 10/5/2008 9:34:00 AM

The 100-year drought continues for at least another year.  After compiling the best record in the National League by a solid margin, the Chicago Cubs find themselves bounced from the playoffs in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Being outscored 20-6 and committing six errors clearly show the Cubbies were overmatched in the NLDS.

While the Dodgers now await the fate of the Phillies and Brewers in their NLDS showdown, the Cubs head home disappointed once again.  My best friend is a Cubs fan, so I feel a bit for him.  At the same time, being a part of Cubdom is a choice, so you have to know the misery you're accepting by making that choice.

Maybe next year, Cubs fans.  For quite literally the one hundredth time, maybe next year.
