The Bearcat Blitz: All That Chazz

by Chris Murdico 10/4/2008 8:40:00 PM

The Cincinnati Bearcats (4-1) took on the Marshall Thundering Herd (3-3) last night in Huntington, WV and left with a 33-10 victory. It marked the start of what could be a good college career for redshirt freshman QB, Chazz Anderson. With Anderson's start, the Bearcats have now had to use three different signal callers to start games. Last year the team didn't have to worry about changing the playbook or changing styles as Ben Mauk started every game but one. Due to injuries to both Dustin Grutza and Tony Pike this season, head coach Brian Kelly had to turn to Anderson this week. That game-time decision actually came as a surprise to most as it was thought that fellow redshirt freshman Zach Collaros was going to start the game and Kelly would switch them in and out. As it turns out, Anderson started the game and played from start to finish.

Anderson had his moments that showed he was in his first career start including throwing an interception to one of the nation's worst pass defenses. Aside from that one mistake, Anderson put together a solid game that included throwing two scores and running for another one. He finished the game going 16-for-26 and 158 yards. His numbers could have possibly been better but once the Bearcats got a commanding lead they kept the ball on the ground.

The Bearcats looked good on both sides of the ball as well as in special teams. Connor Barwin, who played at TE last season and is now playing on the defensive side of the ball, partially deflected on punt and blocked another for a safety in the first half. The defense intercepted Marshall's redshirt freshman QB Mark Cann three times and sacked him three times as well.

It was good to see Anderson perform well in his first start. You could see he was nervous in the early going, but once he got the jitters out, he calmed down and played much better than many probably expected. He lead the Bearcats on two long scoring drives. Anderson capped off an 89-yard drive in the third quarter with a 7-yard scoring pass to Dominic Goodman, the second time they had hooked up on the night. With just over ten minutes left in the fourth quarter, Anderson led the Bearcats on an 86-yard drive that ended with him running the ball in from the 1-yard line.

Next week beings conference play when the Bearcats host Rutgers on Homecoming night. The Scarlet Knights (1-4, 0-1) are having a rough go of it this season and are coming off a 24-17 loss to West Virginia this weekend. While the Bearcats should come away with a "W" next week before heading into their second bye of the season, nothing is for certain in college football, especially in conference play. It will be Anderson's first start at home. As long as he can minimize his mistakes and with what should be a raucous crowd at Nippert Stadium, the Bearcats should be within one game of making another bowl game after next Saturday.

Watson Cut, Henry Activated

by Dan Clasgens 10/4/2008 4:31:00 PM

The Bengals have activated wideout Chris Henry, making him available to return to the field in Sunday's game at Dallas. To make room for the 53-man roster the team cut veteran running back Kenny Watson, who has not been able to get on the field due to a nagging hamstring injury.

Watson has been a valuable player for the team and many are speculating that the Bengals could resign him next week, including Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. The 30-year old has been a valuable role player for six years. However,  a career-high 178 carries has taken its toll on him.

Henry is coming off an unheard of third NFL suspension and will make his '08 debut amidst controversy. The team cut him in July and despite the fact that both Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown said differently, they actually brought in back in after the legal dust settled. It was clearly Brown that made the decision, and likely against Lewis' wishes.

Word is that Henry actually showed up in shape this week and ready to play. The offense clearly needs something, but at 0-4 why sacrifice what little dignity you have left?

How this all shakes up could a long way towards determining whether or not Lewis is the coach. For Henry, let's hope that a 13th chance will work. Maybe the fact that the other 31 teams said no thanks to him, he may now realize that this could be his last shot. One can only hope.

Juice is finally squeezed

by Jimmy Dinsmore 10/4/2008 1:15:00 PM

OJ Simpson was found guilty on 12 charges stemming from an armed robbery he led in a Vegas hotel room. His sentencing is December 5, but it's likely that the Juice will do serious time. If he's sentenced fully (and there's no reason to think that he won't be), he can do up to 30 years in prison. Simpson is currently behind bars.

While these charges and the whole story behind seem soap opera like, it's justice finally for the years that he's been walking around a free man, after being acquitted by the dumbest jury in the world for the murder of his ex-wife and her companion.

This Heisman-winning and NFL Hall of Fame running back had such a great life. Winning the Heisman at USC, going onto greatness with the Buffalo Bills in a Hall of Fame career and even starring in films and commercials. He had it all. However, many people believe (myself included) that OJ did in fact murder his ex-wife Nicole and Ron Goldman. It was deemed the trial of the century. I will always remember the trial and always remember the slow highway chase in his white Bronco.

I couldn't believe someone that had it all would fall like this. Then when he was acquitted, I couldn't believe that he was going to get away with murder. His brazen and arrogant attitude was an insult to the victims and their families. I'm sure those people are laughing last now, that OJ has learned, that eventually there's consequences for your actions. Perhaps years behind bars will make OJ repent for all his crimes.

Playoffs: Where's The Drama?

by Dan Clasgens 10/4/2008 1:02:00 PM

Considering this was supposed to be the playoffs where everything was wide open and every team had a shot to win the World Series, it's pretty disappointing to see all four divisional playoff series are sitting at 2-0 heading into Game 3.

  • The Red Sox continues to own the Angels and rallied to win 7-5 on Friday night in Game 2 of their series.  J.D. Drew stepped up once again and drilled a two-run HR in the top of the ninth to propel Boston to their second straight win in Anaheim. The Angels tied it the bottom of the 8th innning after Chaun Figgins tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly. Now the series goes to Fenway for two, making it an uphill battle for the Angels.

  • The Rays went up two games in their series with the White Sox with a 6-2 on Friday night. Staff ace Scott Kazmir struggled in the first inning, but eventually settled down and gave Tampa Bay six strong innings. It continues to be a total team effort for the young Rays. They head to Chicago now and will only need one of the next three games to advance to the ALCS.

  • Both NLDS series were in a hiatus on Friday for travel. The Cubs dropped both of their first two games against the Dodgers and now must travel to LA and try to win back-to-back games just for the chance to get the series back to Wrigley. The beleagured Brewers are also down 0-2, but at least they are headed home to Miller Park and will hope to avoid the sweep against the Phillies.

History is not in the favor of teams that fall behind 0-2 in the divisional round. Of the 32 teams that have taken 2-0 leads in division series play, 27 have won, 21 by sweeps. Let's take a look though at some execptions to the rule...

1995 ALDS, Mariners vs. Yankees

1999 ALDS, Red Sox vs. Indians

2001 ALDS, Yankees vs. Athletics

2003 ALDS, Red Sox vs. Athletics
