Cueto, Bailey Ailing For Reds

by Dan Clasgens 8/25/2008 9:29:00 PM

From the Dayton Daily News

Reds rookie pitcher Johnny Cueto was examined today, Aug. 25, by team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek. It was determined that Cueto has a posterior strain of his right elbow, possibly due to hyperextension of that elbow.

He will be examined in Cincinnati again Friday and will miss his next start, scheduled for Saturday against the Giants.

In other Reds news, pitcher Homer Bailey has suffered a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament of his right knee.

He will miss his next start for Class AAA Louisville, scheduled for Thursday, and will be evaluated again by Kremchek at the end of the week.

MY TAKE: Shut them down please!!! Why would they even risk to further injury at this dismal point in the season. But this team has already left me asking why all season long.

WILL CARROL'S TAKE: (from Baseball Prospectus to Lance McAlister) - "NOT good. If he's hyperextending, that's a mechanical flaw that will have to be corrected. If there's an upside it's that it's not ligament (yet) and would point to fatigue as the biggest causative."

Fantasy Battle: Cardinals' Quarterbacks

by Dan Clasgens 8/25/2008 8:55:00 PM

It's Matt Leinart, no it's Kurt Warner. Wait a minute its Matt Leinart again. Keeping track of who the starting quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals is enough to make anybody dizzy and certain to give fantasy owners headaches.

Leinart remains the Cardinals' starting quarterback, despite a news report on Sunday that coach Ken Whisenhunt had decided to replace him with Warner, according to the Arizona Republic.

Whisenhunt denied that was his plan and said today that the evaluation process at quarterback is continuing. He met with Leinart this morning to talk about the reports, assuring the young quarterback that the information didn't come from the Cardinals.

Last year, Whisenhunt went to the Leinart to start the game and Warner to finish the game strategy early in the season. A Leinart injury then opened the door for Warner to take the job for the whole game. When the dust settled the numbers ended like this:

  • Matt Leinart -  60/112, 2 TD, 4 INT
  • Kurt Warner - 281/451, 3417 PaYd, 27 TD, 17 INT

Leinart has struggled since being taken since the first round and his best career highlight to this point as a pro has been hanging out in a hot tub with a bunch of scantily-clothed co-eds. Still, he carries a huge price tag and Warner is one good hit away from retirement. I am not crazy about either but Warner is likely to go much higher in drafts/auctions than he should. I am going to hold off on updating the CHEAT SHEET until later in the week, but for now it is a situation to keep your eyes on.

If either QB is eliminated from the equation, the signal caller left standing would make for a solid QB2 with weapons such as Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin at his disposal.

Manning, Brady Making Progress

by Dan Clasgens 8/25/2008 8:50:00 PM

All eyes are on New England and Indianapolis to see if their franchise quarterbacks are going to be ready for the openers. Here's the latest:

MANNING TO RETURN TO PRACTICE (Indianapolis Star)
Peyton Manning is expected to participate in a full-squad practice for the first time Tuesday, the next step in his recovery from knee surgery. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback has been on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing July 14 surgery on his left knee to remove an infected bursa sac. Even if Manning doesn't have a problem with practice, it's a virtual certainty he will not play in Thursday night's preseason finale against Cincinnati in Lucas Oil Stadium. The team hopes Manning will be ready for its Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears.

BRADY SAYS HE WILL BE READY FOR OPENER (Sporting News)
Tom Brady says he'll be ready for the New England Patriots opener even if a foot injury keeps him from taking a single snap in exhibition games. Last season's NFL MVP sat out the first three games and plans to tell coach Bill Belichick he's "feeling great" in hopes of playing in Thursday night's final exhibition game at the New York Giants, the team that ruined the Patriots' unbeaten season by beating them in the Super Bowl. "I'm hoping I'm always out there," Brady said Monday on his regular weekly appearance on WEEI radio, "and if I don't play, I'll be ready for Kansas City."

Bengals' Offense A Mess

by Dan Clasgens 8/25/2008 8:16:00 PM

Bengals' wide receiver has a partially torn labrum in his shoulder, but will play through it and expects to play in Week 1 against Baltimore, according to the NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Chad Johnson has a partially torn labrum in his shoulder, but plans to play through it.

ESPN's John Clayton says the injury is "not too bad." Johnson is in a harness and would need season-ending surgery if the shoulder popped out again, but he considers that "unlikely." Clayton also seems to think that's unlikely. Johnson looks like a risky WR 1/2 pick now, but don't overreact. Handcuffing Johnson with Chris Henry would be a good idea.

The team already made one desperate move in re-signing the troubled Chris Henry last week and now the reportedly are shopping running back Rudi Johnson in an attempt to get a receiver. ESPN's Chris Mortensen says the Bengals are asking for a "real receiver," or someone who could help if Johnson has a setback.

It's hard to imagine what if any value Johnson has, but the fact they are shopping them seems to indicate that his roster spot may be in jeopardy.

I am not counting on much of anything from him whether he stays on the team or not.

At least at running back Chris Perry, Kenny Watson, and DeDe Dorsey could work. However, if Chad goes down for a lengthy period the team does not have the depth, at least proven depth that can be counted on, to fill the shoes.

The bigger problem though is the offensive line. Carson Palmer was pressured all night long on Satruday night against the Saints and sacked three times.  On the third sack Palmer came up bloody with a broken nose.

I am not a big fan of preseason and don't read much into it. Still, this team's inability to pass block and open holes up front is alarming. Stacey Andrews needs to deliver on his promise, but even then the tackles are below average and the center is a joke.

K-Rod Joins Club 50

by Dan Clasgens 8/25/2008 5:50:00 PM

From the Orange County Register

Every time Francisco Rodriguez pulls on his Angels jersey these days, he is reminded of the single-season, major-league saves record he is chasing.

That's because he wears No. 57 — and Bobby Thigpen established the record of 57 saves for the 1990 Chicago White Sox.

And after joining the exclusive 50 saves club Sunday by pitching a scoreless ninth in the Angels' 5-3 comeback victory over the Minnesota Twins, K-Rod knows he is closing in on history.

On Sunday, the right-hander from Venezuela, 26, became the ninth relief pitcher in history to reach the 50-saves mark in a season, padding his major league-leading season total and his own club record.

This is the fourth consecutive season he has recorded at least 40 saves — he had a league-leading 45 in 2005, a league-leading 47 in 2006 and 40 in 2007 — and now has 196 career saves. He was the youngest (at age 24) to reach 100 career saves, and he'll soon be the youngest to reach 200.
