Baseball Approves Instant Replay

by Dan Clasgens 8/21/2008 8:03:00 AM

From ESPN.com:

Baseball umpires and management signed an agreement Wednesday that will allow the sport to start using instant replay to help determine calls on the field.

Major League Baseball still hasn't determined when the use of replays will start. Installation of equipment has been going on at ballparks, and officials have said they hoped to start using replay in August.

Replays will be limited to boundary calls, such as determining whether fly balls were fair or foul, or whether they went over fences.

"We're going to move forward with the understanding the sides will come to the table later and iron out some of the remaining issues," said WUA spokesman Lamell McMorris, who criticized management on Tuesday. "Instant replay will be a work in progress."

Perry Tabbed Bengals' Starting RB

by Dan Clasgens 8/21/2008 7:44:00 AM

The Bengals are already being hit hard by injuries, including RB Rudi Johnson's nagging hamstring.  Johnson has missed all of the preseason so far and that has opened the door for Chris Perry to take the starting job.

"Chris feels like the starting running back and he feels very good about that," head coach Marvin Lewis told the team's website. "Right now that's probably the way we'd enter the season. He's exhibiting it on the practice field, not only in the games he's played but the way he's practiced and that's good to see."

Perry has had his moments this preseason, but at the end of the day he's averaged just 3.6 yards per carry and has managed only 3 receptions (a supposed strong suit) for just three yards. Kenny Watson has been the better of the two runners, gaining just 5 yards less than Perry on 8 less carries.

****

FANTASY TAKE: The Bengals' backfield has all the makings of being a fantasy headache all season long as it appears if it is going to be a three-man running back-by-committee approach by the team. Perry should be the first back taken with Johnson a close second. I would probably stay away from Rudi altogether though. Watson is nice late-round flyer in any format and could payoff bigtime if both backs in front of him go down.

McGahee On Thin Ice

by Dan Clasgens 8/21/2008 7:37:00 AM

From the Baltimore Sun:

Harbaugh said he didn't know when injured running back Willis McGahee would return, and that McGahee might possibly miss the entire preseason. Somehow that doesn't surprise me, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens cut him before the season is over.

McGahee has angered a lot of Ravens officials over at the Castle with his poor work ethic. He doesn't know his plays so I don't see him playing much in the first regular-season game.

****

FANTASY TAKE: I would be shocked if the Ravens cut this guy during the season, but it is pretty clear that he's in the doghouse in Baltimore. Couple that with the fact the team has one of the weakest passing games in the league and I'm letting someone else go after this guy on draft day. Rookie Ray Rice has impressed all preseason and is guy worth a look in the mid-rounds of your draft.
