Phelps Greatest Olympian Ever?

by Bret Sims 8/13/2008 12:02:00 PM

I couldn't do justice to the Michael Phelps story so I have attached a link by Pat Forde of ESPN.  It is a great read on Michael Phelps who is possibly the greatest Olympian of our time.  Phelps is already the most decorated Olympian in history and if he wins his next three races he will break Mark Spitz record of 7 gold medals in one Olympic.

Here is a breakdown of his races so far.

RACE BREAKDOWN

• Pat Forde's breakdown: Phelps is looking to become the first Olympian to win eight golds in a single Games. Here is a race review...COMPLETE STORY

• Race No. 1 -- 400-meter IM: Phelps kept pace with teammate Ryan Lochte and László Cseh in his weakest discipline, the breaststroke, before putting the hammer down in the freestyle to win his first gold of the Games.

• Race No. 2 -- 4x100 free relay: Phelps almost saw his run end, but Jason Lezak came back in the final leg to help the U.S. men edge France to win gold in one of the most memorable relay races in Olympic history.

• Race No. 3 -- 200 freestyle: Phelps easily won his third gold of the Games and ninth of his career in one of his strongest events. He also broke his own world record (1:42.96).

• Race No. 4 -- 200 butterfly: It wasn't even close, folks. Phelps controlled the race from the beginning to win, breaking his own world record and becoming the most decorated gold medalist in Olympic history.

• Race No. 5 -- 4x200 free relay: Phelps chose to swim the first leg of the relay and immediately set the tone. By the time Peter Vanderkaay swam the anchor leg, the Americans held a five-body-length lead.

• Race No. 6 -- 200 individual medley: Friday morning Beijing time, Thursday night in the U.S.

• Race No. 7 -- 100 butterfly: Saturday morning Beijing time, Friday night in the U.S.

• Race No. 8 -- 4x100 medley relay: Sunday morning Beijing time, Saturday night in the U.S.

Owings Part Of Dunn Deal

by Dan Clasgens 8/13/2008 9:18:00 AM

More details of the Reds-Diamondbacks trade made on Monday are being revealed as starting pitcher Micah Owings reportedly is one of the two players to be named later headed to the Reds.

Owings was inconsistent in his 1 1/2 seasons in the Diamondbacks rotation. He had a 4.30 ERA in 29 games (27 starts) last season but was in jeopardy of being bumped from the rotation on several occasions. And after a strong start to this season, Owings had a 7.09 ERA since April 21 and was optioned to Tucson on July 29.

But Owings is known as much, if not more, for his hitting. A former designated hitter in college, he has a career .313 average (35 for 112) with five home runs.

There are some questions about his health right now as he scheduled to miss his Triple A start tonight due to shoulder stiffness. In addition, Owings must clear waivers and it appears that a team claimed him. That means the D-Backs will have to pull him back and send him to the Reds' in the off-season.  It should be interesting to see how it unfolds.

The Reds already have received SP Dallas Buck in the deal and still have one more player to be named later to come.

Fantasy: Strength Of Schedule

by Dan Clasgens 8/13/2008 8:31:00 AM

When trying to forecast what to expect from your fantasy team this season it always helps to look at a players' schedule to see who has favorable match-ups and which player has a tougher road. I have never been one to look too much into the schedule for NFL teams, as you just never know what's going to happen from year-to-year. However, I do think it is easier to get a gage at the player-level.

For instance, if you knew that Denver and Minnesota had the two easiest schedules for running backs Selvin Young and Adrian Peterson become that much more appealing. Meanwhile, a look at the QB schedules reveal that San Diego has the toughest road. That's bad news for Phillip Rivers, who's already having to overcome major off-season surgery.

Another thing to pay attention to is playoff weeks. If your league plays in weeks 13 thur 16, pay attention to see the match-ups durinig that span as that when most leagues' prize money is determined.

Be careful not to let this schedule stuff be the lone factor in building your team, but it can often be the deciding factor. If you are torn between a couple players and struggling to make a decision, it only makes sense to go with the guy that has the better chance for success.

MOST FAVORABLE SCHEDULES (from FFToolBox.com - based on 16-week fantasy schedules)

Bengals Considering Henry Again

by Dan Clasgens 8/13/2008 8:15:00 AM

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Bengals are considering re-signing free agent WR Chris Henry.

Head coach Marvin Lewis ruled out the possibility of signing Henry earlier in the off-season, but after getting a good look at the rookies added and the veteran crop competing to replace Henry the organization has discussed internally about bringing Henry back.

The Bengals cut him after Henry was suspended pending the outcome of his trial for allegedly striking an 18-year-old boy in the face. A mistrial was declared in early July, before the case was dismissed. However, the NFL recently announced that Henry would be suspended for the first four games of the season.

Schefter cautioned that the Bengals could shy away again if early word causes the public to sound off on the possible signing.

It was less than three weeks ago that Lewis ruled out the possibility alogether. Some team may take a chance on Henry, but the Bengals would be insane to bother.

"It's not productive for our football team," Lewis said. "You have to be a productive part to be a NFL player. There is a responsibility to be a NFL player. It's a privilege, not a right."
