GSI Mock Draft: Final Take

by Dan Clasgens 7/25/2008 11:18:00 AM

The annual GSI Mock Draft is complete and the grades are in. Our 10-team mock draft offered some surprises, but also provided great input for owners on want to expect in their upcoming drafts. I was pretty happy with my team, giving myself an A.

I had the No. 2 overall pick and knew I was going to get Peterson or L.T., and actually I would rather have A-Pete.  My starting line-up consists of QB - Carson Palmer, RB - Adrian Peterson and Maurice Jones-Drew, WR - Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes, TE - Jeremy Shockey, FLEX (if used) - either Selvin Young or LenDale White, PK- Josh Scobee, and DEF - Giants.

In the end, my team looks as if it is going to be amongst the league's elite, but there are a few teams that will scare me and even one that I gave an A+ too. Check out my draft recap below and be sure to check out the complete grades and analysis.

Here was the order of my picks.

2. RB - Adrian Peterson - MIN
19. RB - Maurice Jones-Drew - JCK
22. WR - Braylon Edwards - CLE
39. QB - Carson Palmer - CIN
42. WR - Santonio Holmes - PIT
59. RB - Selvin Young - DEN
62. RB - LenDale White - TEN
79. WR - Kevin Curtis - PHI
82. WR - Joey Galloway - TB
99. DEF - Giants - NYG
102. TE - Jeremy Shockey - NO
119. RB - Ahmad Bradshaw - NYG
122. QB - Vince Young - TEN
139. PK - Josh Scobee - JCK

FINAL TAKE: Peterson is a stud and there appears to be plenty of backs in the stable. The passing game compliments things well, assuming Edwards, Holmes, and Shockey live up to their potential. Depth at receiver could go either way though as Curtis and Galloway both come with some risk. Young could bomb, but at least Palmer provides durability.

Bengals Waive Irons

by Dan Clasgens 7/25/2008 11:09:00 AM

The Bengals have lost yet another first-day draft pick as the team waived HB Kenny Irons, under the category of Waived/Failed Physical. Irons failed the team physical earlier this week.

Irons, from Auburn, was Cincinnati's second-round choice in the 2007 draft. He has been unable to play or practice since suffering a torn left knee ligament (ACL) in the '07 preseason opener last Aug. 9 at Detroit. He spent the '07 season on Cincinnati's Reserve/Injured list.

His future with the club and in the NFL remains murky, according to Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson. The Bengals needed Irons' spot to get to the 80-man limit for training camp and they now have 80 players listed on their roster including unsigned draft picks.

Irons' departure is just another blow to the Bengals' recent draft history. Marvin Lewis has preached since his arrival to Cincinnati in 2003 that you build through the draft. However, the coach has been unable to do so. If you look at the team's first three rounds of picks since Lewis' arrival, few players remain on the team:

2003
1. Carson Palmer - franchise QB living up to can't-miss tag
2. Eric Steinbach - fled to Cleveland via free-agency
3. Kelley Washington - team let him walk; signed w/NE

2004
1. Chris Perry - Managed 73 carries in 3 years for 3.3 ypc
2. Keiwan Ratliff - cut by Bengals and Bucs, trying to make Colts' roster
2. Madieu Williams - signed this off-season by Minnesota
3. Caleb Miller - currently out of the game
3. Landon Johnson - left for Carolina via free-agency

2005
1. David Pollack - career-ending neck injury
2. Odell Thurman - has been suspsended by NFL past 2 season
3. Chris Henry - released after numerous arrests

2006

1. Johnathan Joseph - proven to be a capable starter, with upside
2. Andrew Whitworth - has been versatile, but not overwhelming
3. Frostee Rucker - Has 7 career tackles and off-the-field issues

2007

1. Leon Hall - too early too tell after up & down rookie year
2. Kenny Irons - injury forced released w/out him ever playing a down

Rumor Mill: Reds Weighing Options

by Dan Clasgens 7/25/2008 8:25:00 AM

The trading deadline is now less than a week away and at 10.5 games back in the NL Central and 9.5 games in the Wildcard race, it may be time for the Reds to turn the page to next season.  General Manager Walt Jocketty has plenty decisions ahead and with such a great core of young talent he shouldn't be in a hurry to go into "blow it all up mode", rather he needs to focus on plugging holes moving forward.

The market for Adam Dunn has been minimal and suitors for Ken Griffey Jr. are pretty much non-existent, but that hasn't stopped the Reds' name from popping in several rumors. Suprisingly, the team has been mentioned as suitors of some relievers on the market.

Let's take a look at some of the latest rumors surrounding the team:

Earlier this week, the San Francisco Chronicle reported theat the Reds have entered the mix for Huston Street, the A's closer. Street is under team control through 2010.  On the other hand, Street could earn more than $5MM next year and the Reds are already paying Francisco Cordero $12MM in '09. Elsewhere, the Baltimore Sun reported on Thursday that the Reds were one of a handful of teams on hand to scout the Orioles' All-Star closer George Sherrill.

Starter Bronson Arroyo has won five consecutive starts and that has some teams interested too. According to the Rocky Mountain News, the Rockies are interested in starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo.  Rooney says the Reds might be willing to pick up some of the $22.5MM owed to Arroyo for 2009-10. FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal also reported earlier in the week that the Yankees may explore other trades, and are said to have interest in Arroyo and possibly the Blue Jays' A.J. Burnett.

The Yankees could also be a final desitination for Adam Dunn. Jon Heyman of SI.com speculated that Adam Dunn could be a nice addition for the Yankees, one that might mostly cost just money.
