Cordero's Slump Costly

by Dan Clasgens 7/22/2008 11:09:00 AM

On what is undoubtedly the most important homestand of the season, the Reds have stumbled to a 2-3 mark. The fashion in which they have played these game epitomizes their entire season, frustrating. In all three losses the Reds had the lead late in the game, only to watch the bullpen blow it. Closer Francisco Cordero has blown two saves on his own.

A closer look at the stats, suggest the former All-Star closer that the Reds shelled out $46 million for is struggling mightily.

That's two blown saves and two losses in four games for Cordero (4-3) and six blown saves for the season. On Thursday vs. New York, he allowed four ninth-inning runs and six hits for the loss.

"The last three outings, I gave up about seven runs. That's not what I was brought up here to do," said Cordero, who has 20 saves for the season, told Reds.com. "I was brought here to do a job -- to get the last three outs. That's not been the case. I've been pitching in the ninth inning with a lot of trouble. I'll get to the last inning, give up a run or get two men on base. I can't be pitching like that. I've got to do a better job and do better than that. It's not my style and that's not me."

I loved the signing of Cordero and am happy to see ownership pay money to get big time free agents, but he has now blown 6 saves in 26 chances and we still have him under contract for three more years.  Meanwhile, Dave Weathers, last year's closer who is likely going to be dealt before the deadline, only blew 6 saves in 39 chances in 2007.

GSI Cheat Sheet: Preseason - Volume I

by Dan Clasgens 7/22/2008 10:53:00 AM

After careful deliberation, we are ready to release the first edition of the GSI.com Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet for 2008:

It comes as no surprise that after their record-setting 2007 that both Tom Brady and Randy Moss find themselves atop their respective positions.  However, running back isn't as clear cut. LaDainain Tomlinson gets the nod in yearly leagues and formats that heavily favor receptions, but for those of you in dynasty leagues Adrian Peterson makes for a better pick.

There are some surprises perhaps at some of the other positions where Jason Witten, the Vikings DEF, and Nick Folk top our list.

GSI Mock Draft: Rounds 9-10

by Dan Clasgens 7/22/2008 10:22:00 AM

With the GSI Mock Draft entering the final six rounds, we begin to double-up with the recap:

RECAP: ROUND 1 | ROUND 2 | ROUND 3 | ROUND 4 | ROUND 5 | ROUND 6 | ROUND 7 | ROUND 8

ROUND 9
81. PREUTH - Steelers DEF
82. CLASGENS - Joey Galloway - WR
83. HUMBERT - Bernard Berrian - WR
84. BOLTON - Owen Daniels - TE
85. DINSMORE - Laveranues Coles - WR
86. MURDICO - Donald Driver - WR
87. SIMS - Jay Cutler - QB
88. SIMON - Nate Burleson - WR
89. WETZEL - Matt Schaub - QB
90. FISCHER - Justin Fargas - RB

ROUND 10
91. FISCHER - Patriots DEF
92. WETZEL - Cowboys DEF
93. SIMON - Deuce McAllister RB
94. SIMS - Chester Taylor RB
95. MURDICO - Eli Manning QB
96. DINSMORE - Bears DEF
97. BOLTON - Jaguars DEF
98. HUMBERT - DeAngello Williams - CAR
99. CLASGENS - Giants DEF
100. PREUTH - Ladell Betts - WA

My Picks: Galloway is the fourth receiver I have selected, but one that easily could emerge as a weekly starter on my roster. Somewhere between 80 and the 100th picks overall you can expect to see these type of wideouts fall off the board. His age is a concern though, but I still think he has upside after getting 98 targets last year. The Giants defense could be argued as fantasy's top option and easily a top 5 unit and some 30 picks later than the first defenses - San Diego and Minnesota - went off the board. I took heat from SIMS earlier, but he only has two wideouts on his team right now (Chad and Calvin Johnson) and I have added veterans Kevin Curtis and Joey Galloway as insurance. The Giants could easily equal or surpass the output by the others. Don't kid yourself, I am big on having a good defense, but this year there simply is not enough seperation in the top 6-8 units to justify taking one early. BUILD DEPTH AT KEY POSITIONS.

Nice Finds: Owen Daniels (84), Justin Fargas (90), Chester Taylor (94)

Final Take: Many teams still need backup QB's and kickers. Most have TE and a DEF at this point. The key to success in the later rounds is knowing what owners need what.
