Cubs: Wood's Finger A Concern

by Dan Clasgens 7/21/2008 9:00:00 PM

From the Chicago Tribune:

The blister on Kerry Wood's right index finger is likely to send him to the disabled list for the 12th time in his career.

"We're coming to the point where we're going to have to come to a conclusion about what to do," manager Lou Piniella said Sunday. Wood hasn't pitched since July 11, so the Cubs can backdate him on the DL to July 12, meaning he can return Sunday against Florida at Wrigley Field.

That means Carlos Marmol will assume the closer's role in Arizona and for most of the four-game series against the Marlins. Marmol pitched a perfect ninth Sunday with a seven-run lead after being booed at Wrigley Field last week when he blew a five-run lead in the ninth inning.

"We're coming to the point where we're going to have to come to a conclusion about what to do," manager Lou Piniella said Sunday.

Wood has been a factor in the Cubs' success this season.  He is 4-2 with 24 saves, a 3.02 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. He has been much better suited for the closer's role and is getting the most out of his pitches. His 55 strikeouts and only 13 walks in 44 2/3 innings tells you all you need to know about his command.

Why Is Griffey Still Hitting Third?

by Dan Clasgens 7/21/2008 8:46:00 PM

Ken Griffey Jr. is one of my favorite players of all-time.  There's no telling how good his numbers would've been had he not had to deal with all the injuries.  Still, despite his ability to stay healthy for most of this season, the future Hall of Famer is a shell of his formerself.  However, Reds' manager Dusty Baker continues to bat him third.  My friend Lance McAlsiter (The LotD) offered up some interesting numbers during his show on Monday:

Here is where Jr ranks among ML with at least 200 plate appearance when hitting in the 3rd spot:

25th BA - .245
14th OBP - .360
21st SLG - .409
19th OPS - .769
12th HR - 10
12th RBI - 41
4th BB - 54
12th K - 52

NFL: Trade Winds Blowing

by Dan Clasgens 7/21/2008 8:32:00 PM

The Major League Baseball trading deadline is a week away, but it was the NFL that stole the headlines on Monday as two deals sent disgruntled Pro Bowlers to new teams.

The day began with DE Jason Taylor getting dealt from Miami to Washington in an exchange for a 2nd and 6th Round pick in the 2009 draft. Taylor managed 11 sacks for the Dolphins last year as the team went 1-15, but he has been a headache for new team president Bill Parcells since the Tuna's arrival to Southern Florida.

The move after defensive end Phillip Daniels  injured his left anterior cruciate ligament during 7-on-7 drills on the team's first day of camp and it was believed that the injury was season-ending.

The Redskins' NFC East counterparts, the New York Giants, also were busy on Monday as they sent TE Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints for their 2nd and 5th Round picks in next year's draft.

Shockey rejoins offensive coordinator Sean Payton in New Orleans and could be the perfect fit for the Saints' offense, assuming he can stay healthy, something he has been unable to do.

"Jeremy is a player that we are excited to have on our roster. He is someone I am familiar with as a player," Payton told FOX Sports. "He brings a skill set to the position that I feel will be a tremendous benefit to our offense."

Milka Duno Sucks; Danica's Hot

by Jeremy Fischer 7/21/2008 1:54:00 PM

Alright, I'm not the biggest Danica Patrick fan in the world.  But I've seen the video now several times of her and fellow female driver Milka Duno's "confrontation" (I use that term loosely).  All I have to say is if this were real racing (i.e. NASCAR), Duno gets the beat-down of her life.

Other than the fact that Patrick has a history of getting upset, I don't understand the flack she's taking here.  If you know anything about racing, you take one look at the video and you can immediately tell that Patrick is in the right.  Danica pulled up on her, not once, but twice because she had the obviously faster car.  Duno went into the corners and turned down on Patrick.  It's a technique known in racing as "blocking".  And it usually pisses off even the best-of-the-best of drivers.  But in this case, Danica was nice enough to back off the first time it happened in order to keep from wrecking them both.

The second time it occured is when Patrick became angry.  And even when Danica finally made the pass, Duno drove down on her a third time and almost clipped her back wheels.  To compound matters, and what's most egregious, this was PRACTICE!  To borrow our good friend Allen Iverson for a second, "Practice?  You're talking about practice?  Not a game.  But practice?"

That's right Allen, we are talking 'bout practice in this case.

On top of everything, Danica never even raised her voice when she went to Duno's pits to talk to her, unitl Duno threw a towel in her face.   If that's NASCAR, somebody gets her ass beat right then and there.  And I don't mean Danica.

So to recap:  Duno tries to block Danica, not once, not twice, but three freaking times, in PRACTICE, then throws a towel in Danica's face when confronted about the "bush league" tactic, and Danica comes out the bad guy (or girl, whatever)?  I don't think so.

2008 ESPY's Highlights

by Bret Sims 7/21/2008 11:47:00 AM

I was never a fan of NSYNC but I have to give props to Justin Timberlake hosting the 2008 ESPY's last night.  He was brutal on a couple of athletes but I found him spot and and very funny.

Here are some highlights...

1.  Making fun of how much David Beckham has improved the US view of soccer.

2.  Making fun of Paul Pierce's supposed knee injury during the NBA Finals.

3.  Putting his hand up in Mario Chalmers' face to show the Memphis nation how to guard a shooter.

4.  Shooting free throws without looking, hooks, bounces and other ways in which he made it as he slammed Memphis.

5.  Constantly drawing attention to Aaron Rodgers that Favre might be coming back.

6.  Making fun of Eli Manning saying he won a Super Bowl and finally saw a woman naked.  Manning's woman looked rather pissed about the whole thing.

7.  Victoria Beckham either had a stick shoved up her butt all night or too much botox in her lips to show any type of facial expression.

8.  Danica Patrick looked pissed that she didn't win anything but she is pretty much used to that feeling.  Maybe she should have gone up on stage and thrown a temper tantrum like she did against Milka Duno.

Anyone else have any to add?
