Reds: Who's #5 In Rotation?

by Dan Clasgens 6/1/2008 3:52:00 PM

The Reds placed Josh Fogg on the 15-day DL with a sore back Sunday and called up right-handed reliever Gary Majewski. The move leaves Cincinnati with more uncertainty over its fifth starter's spot.

Fogg was handed the No. 5 spot in the rotation back after Matt Belisle was sent down earlier in the week, but the 31-year-old right hander got hit hard again Saturday as he allowed seven hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings of an 8-7 victory over Atlanta. After the game, Fogg complained about back spasms.

"We need some pitching help bad," manager Dusty Baker said. "We can't wait."

Fogg started the season in the rotation, but was demoted to long relief after three poor starts. He went 15 days between appearances out of the bullpen.

The Reds optioned Belisle to Triple-A on Tuesday to turn him into a reliever and is not an option for a return. That leaves the question who will pitch on Thursday in Philadelphia against Cole Hammels?

Though Jeremy Affeldt could be given a spot start or perhaps the team looks at other minor league options (i.e. Matt Maloney), but my money is on Homer Bailey. Bailey has struggled of late, but there seem to be too many pieces of the puzzle falling in place to suggest it will not be him.

Reds' beat writer Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News certainly thinks so. He reports on his blog that Bailey was scheduled to pitch for the Class AAA Louisville Bats Sunday night and will, but he is expected to pitch only two innings and take the rest of the night off.

Whomever makes the start for the Reds on Thursday will have to square off against Hamels. The Phillies' left-handed ace has dominated the Reds in his short career (see below).

HAMELS THREE STARTS VS. REDS
2008: 1-0, 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K's
2007: 1-0, 9 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 15 K's
2006: 0-0, 5 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 BB, 7 K's

Totals: 2-0, 21 IP, 2 ER, 11 H, 10 BB, 26 K's - 0.86 ERA, 0.95 WHIP

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

by Dan Clasgens 6/1/2008 3:15:00 PM
STUDS OF THE WEEK
Few players in the history of the game have had an career opening as great as the one that the Reds' highly-touted Jay Bruce just turned in following his call-up on Tuesday. The Reds' slugger had 13 hits and six walks in his first 28 plate appearences. He has scored 10 runs and stole two bases while driving in six and going yard twice, including a game-winning walk-off homerun on Saturday. The Rays' Scott Kazmir has been lights out since returning from a stint on the DL with an elbow injury, including two stellar performances this week. Kazmir logged 14 innings in two starts, stirking out 16 and walking just three as he posted a 0.64 ERA and picked up two wins in the process.

DUDS OF THE WEEK
Over the past few seasons the Dodgers' Jonathan Broxton has been amongst the game's top setup men. However, the big right-hander just turned in a week that he would like to forget. He blew his third save of the week on Saturday against the Mets and has posted a 0-1 record, 5.79 ERA, and 1.71 WHIP in that span. The Marlins' Dan Uggla had a rare off-week as he managed just 5 hits in 28 at bats and struck out 12 times in that span. Uggla still is sporting a .300 average and has hit 16 HR's on the year, making him on of fantasy's best second baseman.

Fantasy Enigma: Kevin Jones

by Dan Clasgens 6/1/2008 12:46:00 PM

The Lions parted way with another first-round pick by cutting ties with Kevin Jones earlier this off-season. Jones' short career has been overshadowed by a series of injuries and new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto wanted to change directions.

"I know the NFL will be shocked,'' Dr. D.S. Ping, who is spearheading Jones' rehab work, told MLive.com. "He can go into (training) camp right now. All he needs is football conditioning. They told him it'd be a year and he's ready now.''

Just five months removed from reconstruction surgery on his right knee, former Detroit Lions running back Kevin Jones turned in an amazing workout before a couple of reporters on Thursday. Check out the video below to watch is amazing workouts.

Kevin Jones talks rehab and life after the Lions

The Titans and Patriots have both expressed interest. Where ever Jones winds up, he will only be able to share carries at best. However, he could be worth a late-round flyer that could pan out big for fantasy owners given the right situation. He has a workout scheduled for June 28 and at that point we could see him with a new home. Keep your eyes on this as the summer progresses.

Report: Johnson To Be At Camp

by Dan Clasgens 6/1/2008 12:33:00 PM

Though everything is subject to change when it comes to Bengals receiver Chad Johnson, ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Johnson’s current plan is to avoid breaching his contract (and owing daily fines and possibly a chunk of previously-paid bonus money) by reporting for a mandatory minicamp that opens on June 12.

The website suggests that Johnson intends to report but to “not do anything.”  Such an approach is similar to the strategy employed by receiver Terrell Owens three years ago in Philly, who reported for training camp with the goal of being such a pain in the butt that the team would either trade him or cut him.

Johnson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has been down this road in the past with T.O., but it would be hard to imagine Johnson going to that extreme. Let's not forget that Owens lost four game checks from that bonehead move and it remains to be seen if Johnson is willing to do that. Especially when there has been many reports that Chad is broke and that is financial concerns are what prompted much of the trade demands to begin.

The Cincinnati Enquirer recently reported that he owes more than $13,000 in taxes on his Walnut Hills home. According to tax records at the Hamilton County Auditor’s Office, Johnson owes a total of $13,063.35. Of that, $12,780.30 is delinquent.

It's interesting that Johnson hasn't said a word publicly since before the draft and there are some websites that are speculating that he could be hoping the Bengals "forgot" his trade demands and how he threw the organization under the bus.

By the Numbers: Lakers vs. Celtics

by Dan Clasgens 6/1/2008 9:56:00 AM

The Celtics haven't won a title since Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish led them past Houston in 1986. Boston and the Lakers of Magic Johnson, James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar dominated the NBA in the 1980s: From 1980-88, the two rivals won all but one of the nine NBA championships -- three for Boston, five for Los Angeles (and one for the Philadelphia 76ers) -- and met for the title three times in four years.

It will be the 11th championship meeting between the franchises, with Boston winning eight of its NBA-best 16 titles against the Lakers. But Los Angeles won the last two, in 1985 and '87.

Here's some more numbers for you to chew on:

0 - Number of titles Kobe Bryant, in the Finals after his first regular season NBA MVP year, has won without Shaquile O'Neal

0 - World title series that Boston's Big 3 - Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen - have played in

2 - Games the Celtics and Lakers played against each this season, Boston won both

3 - Titles won by Lakers with Kobe and Shaq from 2000 thru 2002

11 - Lakers vs. Celtics in the Finals together for the 11th time

14 - Lakers have won 14 championships -- nine in Los Angeles and five in Minneapolis

20 - Celtics showing up for their team's 20th Finals appearance.

24 - The number of wins that Boston mustered in 2006-07 compared to their 66 this year

31 - After this series, the Lakers and Celtics combined will own 31 of the 62 NBA titles

32- Kobe Bryant is averaging 31.9 ppg during the playoff this season
