Bo, your shot at coaching ends here

by Adam Bartel 4/24/2008 7:16:00 PM

Meet Brandon "Bo" Kunkle.  Bo is an assistant football coach for the Fairborn High Skyhawks in Fairborn, Ohio, and to pay the bills he works as a bartender and DJ.  Bo is also a contestant on MTV's runaway hit/trainwreck reality dating show A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila 2, or as I refer to it, the STD Appendix to the New England Journal of Medicine.

For those not familiar with the show, it's a reality dating show, with the twist that both women and men are competing for the affection of Ms. Tequila.  Whereas contestants on most shows compete in relatively tame challenges to score points with their desired, this show forces both sexes to go through tribulations such as x-rated fashion shows, wrestling in jello-like substances, and other sexually charged contests against each other, as well as get into alcohol fueled fights.  And as for the ringleader, Ms. Tequila herself...here's a link to her Wikipedia page - pretty much every other site that she's on is a bit unsafe for work purposes and would give you hives in the process.

This is a tricky subject, because to a lot of people the idea of bisexuality of any sort tends to be a hot button.  But put that aside for a moment if you can.  If you were a parent of a high school student, would you feel good about having your son be coached by someone that participates in the above competitions (which are just a sample of the contests) for the "love" of someone that has as questionable habits and tastes that Tila does?

I have to say, I'm hardly a prude, and it takes a lot to make me uncomfortable, but I think I'd have a problem with it if my kid was going to Fairborn (although the Skyhawks' 1-9 record in 2007 might have been a cause for concern already).  It's one thing to watch this on TV and be amused/alarmed by this sort of show; it's quite another to have someone in a position of respect within the community condoning participation in it.  And you can't really claim that what he does on his own time is his own business; he gave that right up the second he signed on the dotted line with MTV.

As more and more reality shows crop up, and as Youtube becomes a greater part of our lives, the amount of transparency into our public figures' lives is going to increase.  By all accounts, Bo seems like a good guy who wants to do right.  Unfortunately for him, he may have to learn the hard way that, if he wants to be working with kids, he needs to keep more of his life private.  Or, maybe he's decided that he wants to become a reality celebrity, and that's ok too.

Ballin' for dollars: Day 5

by Adam Bartel 4/24/2008 12:21:00 PM

Detroit 105, Philadelphia 88

They say that game 2 is always the statement game.  Here's my best take on what those statements were:

Detroit: "Ok, we're ready to play now."

Philly: "Cool, we're ok with a split at your place."

Every team should have a Tayshaun Prince.  He made Andre Iguodola (1-9, 4 points) look downright silly.  Not much else to say about this game.

Boston 96, Atlanta 77

This game was what happens when you have a bunch of good but not great players, and no one's got the ability to carry the team on their back.  Joe Johnson and Josh Smith are good, Al Horford's going to be very good, and Marvin Williams & Josh Childress are nice, but none of them are enough of "the man" to right the ship when things go south.  I have no evidence to back it up, but it just seems like the Hawks play better with Mike Bibby on the bench.

Rajon Rondo (12 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 turnover) has become a beast of a point guard.  Having Sam Cassell as a mentor for the playoffs doesn't hurt either.  Nice minutes management from Doc Rivers again - Ray Allen was the only player over 35 minutes.

Los Angeles 122, Denver 107

I don't know who on the Nuggets can guard Kobe.  I know that Kenyon Martin can't - the 49 points he gave up proved that.  I also know that taunting him probably isn't going to help matters either.

49 points on 27 shots for #24, to go with 10 assists.  Very nice outings off the bench by Luke Walton (18/7/5, +24) and Sasha Vujacic (3-5 from 3's, +15 in 21 minutes), which covered for poor efforts from Vlad Radmanovich and Lamar Odom - and those will happen again, so the bench will be needed at some point.

For the Nuggets, Marcus Camby had another strong night on the boards (17 total), and J.R. Smith scored 21 points without going crazy or injuring anyone.  Eduardo Najera (-19 in 22 minutes) is just useless at times.

Fantasy: Furcal Fantastic

by Dan Clasgens 4/24/2008 10:04:00 AM

Fantasy owners that took a gamble on Dodgers' shortstop Rafael Furcal this year are being rewarded early on. Furcal, who was hampered by an ankle injury for most of the 2007 season, is off to one of his best starts ever. Notoriously a slow starter (April .avg over the past three seasons -203, .198, .228, .245.), Furcal is hitting .398 with a .663 slugging percentage and six stolen bases. In addition, he has drawn 13 walks which has propelled him .485 on-base percentage.

The hot start ensures that Furcal is going to stay at the top of the Dodgers' batting order too. Believe it or not, Joe Torre was actually debating who would hit leadoff for the team in spring training. Being at the top of the order should translate into more runs and hitting in front of Russell Martin will allow Furcal to see plenty of good pitches to hit.

Furcal, 30, has been a reliable fantasy option for most of his career. However, he could be on the verge of a career year. Consider, he is on pace for 254 hits, 23 HR's, 69 RBI's, 100 walks, 138 runs, and 46 SB's. Will that continue? Absolutely not, but his success is definitely more of a trend than it is a mirage. He ranks in my top five fantasy shortstops now, behind Jimmy Rollins, Hanley Ramirez, and maybe Miguel Tejada.
