Draft: Rams on the clock

by Dan Clasgens 4/23/2008 3:32:00 PM

With the Miami Dolphins signing Michigan tackle Jake Long to a $57 million ($30 guaranteed), five-year deal on Tuesday, the St. Louis Rams are now on the clock. The team appears to be deciding between nabbing either DE Chris Long (Virginia) or DT Glenn Dorsey (LSU). They could also trade down as well.

They could of used the help on the offensive line and with the Dolphins nabbing the prized tackle right off the board, the Rams must now look to address a defense that ranked near the bottom last season in most major catagories.

What makes things real interesting is quarterback Matt Ryan. The Rams are not interested in him too much as Marc Bulger is already established as the franchise quarterback. However, the Ravens and Falcons both reportedly covet the former Boston College signal caller. Will either team trade up to get their man.

The Rams could slide down and if they miss on both Dorsey and C. Long, don't be surprised to see them turn to USC's DT Sedrick Ellis, a name that has been mostly linked to the Bengals in most mock drafts.

Things are going to get real interesting from now leading up to the start up the draft, but clearly what the Rams ultimately decide to do with the No. 2 pick is greatly going to determine how much of the first round will unfold.

Xavier: Miller gets extension

by Dan Clasgens 4/23/2008 3:12:00 PM

The Xavier Musketeers extended the contact of the men's basketball head coach Sean Miller, adding 10 years to existing contract which will now extend through the 2018 season. Miller led Xavier to an Elite Eight appearance in 2008 and 93-39 mark in his four years at the helm for the Muskies.

Here's the release from the school:
Xavier University Associate Vice President and Athletic Director Mike Bobinski announced today that the University and head men’s basketball coach Sean Miller have agreed to an extended contract that will run through the 2017-18 season. The 39-year-old Miller, who had a six-year contract when he was hired on July 8, 2004, is receiving his third contract extension and the longest ever given to a Xavier University head coach.

The new deal is a 10-year agreement beginning in the 2008-09 season and running through the 2017-18 season. “This agreement represents an unprecedented commitment by Xavier University to head coach Sean Miller,” said Bobinski. “It reflects our strong belief in Sean’s leadership of our basketball program and further solidifies our mutual desire to achieve success at the highest level of Division I basketball.”

“I would like to thank (Xavier University President) Fr. Michael Graham and Mike Bobinski for their incredible support of our basketball program and continued belief in me as the head coach,” Miller said in a statement.

“Today’s commitment reinforces my own beliefs and excitement about our future together. With great anticipation I look forward to continuing to build our program and the challenges that accompany doing so.”

Jocketty In - Krivsky Out

by Jim Humbert 4/23/2008 1:18:00 PM

The Reds announced on Wednesday morning that Walt Jocketty has been named President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. He replaces Wayne Krivsky as GM.

Since the hiring of Jocketty in January as a special advisor, there have been many who questioned how long it may be until he would replace Krivsky. They have their answer now and it is 'not very long.'

While the Reds have not gotten off to a great start, it would be hard to blame too many of their problems on Krivsky. Like all GM's some acquisitions work (Edinson Volquez) while others fail (Josh Fogg.) Either way, it is Jocketty's team now.

Here's the official release from the Reds:

Cincinnati Reds President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini today announced that special advisor Walt Jocketty has been named President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. Jocketty replaces Wayne Krivsky as general manager,

Jocketty was hired January 11 as special advisor to advise and assist Castellini in every facet of baseball operations, including matters related to the front office, Major League field and support personnel, scouting and minor league and international operations along with training and medical services.

A 33-year veteran of professional baseball, including the previous 13 with St. Louis as general manager, Jocketty's Cardinals teams went to the playoffs seven times. He won the National League Central Division six times and the 2001 NL Wild Card while earning two National League championships and the 2006 World Series title. The Cardinals have produced winning seasons in seven of the last eight years.

While general manager in St. Louis, Jocketty was named Major League Baseball's Executive of the Year by The Sporting News in 2000 and 2004 and by Baseball America in 2000. In 2004, he also received the Rube Foster Legacy Award from the Negro Hall of Fame as National League Executive of the Year.
