Draft Spotlight: Brian Brohm

by Dan Clasgens 4/20/2008 12:42:00 PM

It wasn't too long ago that Brian Brohm was touted as a sure-fire top 5 pick in the NFL Draft. However, after a senior season upon which Louisville greatly underacheived, he dropped a bit on draft boards. Now it is unclear whether or not Brohm will even go in the first round.

Brohm lacks the rocket arm, but is accurate and has great mechanics. You can tell the kid was the son of a coach. He learns quick and will only get better with experience. As a senior, Brohm actually threw as many interceptions as he had in his first three seasons, but he did also throw for a career high 4,024 yards and 30 touchdowns to go along with a 65.1% completion rate.

Boston College's Matt Ryan is largely believed to be the draft's top quarterback and one that Baltimore, who picks No. 8 overall, apparently covets. Assuming that holds true, where does Brohm fall?

The 22-year old is going to provide great value where ever he winds up. He is the top of a second tier of quarterbacks that also includes Michigan's Chad Henne and Delaware's Joe Flacco. As has been the case in past drafts, quarterback-needy teams might consider trading into the back half of the first round to snare one of the second-level signal-callers. Consider this recent history:

In 2007, the Browns dealt back in to select Notre Dame's Brady Quinn (No. 22). Two years prior, the Redskins made a similar move to snare Auburn's Jason Campbell (No. 25). In 2004, the Bills traded back for J.P. Losman (No. 22) and the year before that, the Ravens swung a deal with the Patriots to get Kyle Boller (No. 19).

I see a trade coming, but most of the mock drafts I have checked out see Ryan either going to the Falcons at #3 or the Ravens at #8. Whichever team don't get Ryan in Round 1 will turn to Brohm in Round 2. There is going to be a surprise team pop out and make a move at this guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see Minnesota to make a move and maybe even Miami.

Fantasy: Covering the Bases

by Dan Clasgens 4/20/2008 11:41:00 AM

Another week is in the bag. Let's recap some of the top news and look ahead to Stat Period 4:

STUDS OF THE WEEK
Even at 35 years of age, Chipper Jones continues to produce in the middle of the Braves' order. Jones has homered five times in the past seven days while batting .560 in that span. Assuming he stays healthy Jones will continue to perform as a quality starting third baseman.  Hello Cliff Lee! The Indians' left hander is looking like the 2005-version of himself (18-5 that year) and is coming off back-to-back stellar starts - 2-0, 16 IP, 1 ER, 16 K's, 4 hits allowed, and only 1 BB. If somehow he is still available in your league snatch him up before someone else does.

DUDS OF THE WEEK
I am still waiting for the big breakout from Marlins' OF Jeremy Hermida. He only managed three hits in 20 at bats and whiffed seven times in those trips to the plate. He is not worth holding on to non-keeper mixed formats where there are simply too many outfield options. Yankees' youngster Phillip Hughes had a rough week going 0-2 with a 13.40 ERA while allowing 15 hits and five walks in just 7 1/3 innings.

Reds: Belisle Back

by Dan Clasgens 4/20/2008 10:25:00 AM

The Reds announced on Saturday that starting pitcher Matt Belisle, who has been battling a sore right forearm, will be activated and start Monday night to open up a brief two-game series with the Dodgers at the Great Amercian Ballpark. Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said Belisle will start Monday in place of Josh Fogg, and manager Dusty Baker confirmed the pitching rotation change after Saturday's game, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Belisle went 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA in three rehab starts. He struck out 12.

Fogg signed a $1 million, one-year deal this off-season and has been a disappointment. The 31-year old right hander is 1-2 with a whopping 13.09 ERA while allowing  16 hits and walking five batters in 11 innings.  He will head to the pen for now, but don't be surprised to see the Reds try to unload him on another pitching-starved team or flat out release him.

Triple Crown: War Pass ruled out of Derby

by Dan Clasgens 4/20/2008 9:44:00 AM

With the Kentucky Derby less than two weeks away let's take a look at some of the latest news and notes from the Triple Crown trail:

Leg fracture sidelines War Pass
Trainer Nick Zito announced early Saturday morning that X-rays taken Friday afternoon revealed a tiny fracture in a sesamoid bone in the left front leg of War Pass, according to the Daily Racing Form. The fracture, which Zito described as "very small," has very big ramifications. It removes War Pass from the May 3 Kentucky Derby, changes the complexion of the race because of the defection of a key front-runner, and improves the position of everyone on the graded stakes earnings list, since War Pass, the two-year old champion, was ranked first, with $1.47 million.

Pletcher continues to roll at Keeneland
A week after finishing first and second in the Toyota Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland with Monba and Cowboy Cal, trainer Todd Pletcher was in the winner's circle once again in Saturday's with Behindatthebar ($13.60), who by a length over Samba Rooster in the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes.  Though it might have seemed that Pletcher now has three horses en route to the Kentucky Derby, he said it would be unlikely. If Behindatthebar does run in one of the Triple Crown races, "it probably will be in the Preakness," the trainer told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

My Top Derby Picks (Final picks coming 5/1)
Colonel John - The horse has never ran on the dirt, but the 1 1/4 mile-run fits his style well
Big Brown - Hasn't ran many races, but this horse has all the talents
Pyro - Horse blew it in the Bluegrass Stakes last weekend, but still deserves consideration
*Bob Black Jack - Not sure if this horse can go the distance, but he appears game

*Sleeper Pick

Danica Patrick, resident of the winner's circle

by Adam Bartel 4/20/2008 9:18:00 AM

Well, I guess all the whiners will just have to find someone else to target their rage at.

Danica Patrick, Japan 300 champion.
