Separated at birth, NCAA style

by Adam Bartel 3/21/2008 11:52:00 PM

Here are some participants in day 2 of the NCAA tournament that I noticed bore more than a little resemblance to celebrities of some level:

Davidson's Stephen Curry, and poker professional Phil Ivey

Georgetown's Jonathan Wallace, and Cuba Gooding Jr.

Butler's Matt Howard, and MTV's Gauntlet Series' Evan Starkman

Western Kentucky's Ty Rogers, and former Indiana University star Tom Coverdale

North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough, and WWE's Mike "The Miz" Mizanin

Siena coach Fran McCaffery, and U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

And finally, CBS' Billy Packer, and the Cloverfield monster

Make him disappear!!

Rumor has it that the leading candidate to replace Providence College's head basketball coach, Tim Welsh, is current George Mason head coach (and Providence alum) Jim Larranaga.

Perhaps someone ought to show this video to the AD at Providence, so he can reconsider:

NCAA Tourney Upset Specials Today?

by Chris Murdico 3/21/2008 12:06:00 PM

Day two of the NCAA tournament starts today at 12:15 with the game between #2 seed Tennessee and #15 seed American. Not likely to see an upset there. And in yesterday's first round action there were only two "upsets" based on seeds when #11 seed Kansas State toppled the #6 seed USC and #9 seed Texas A&M beat #8 seed BYU.  Duke almost suffered another upset, but they pulled out a one point victory over Belmont in the waining moments of their game. Other than that the rest of the first day was all chalk.

That could change today though. Here are a few games to watch out for upsets happening in today.

  • #2 Tennessee vs. #15 American - As I said, its not likely to happen, but crazier things have happened in this dance
  • #5 Clemson vs. #12 Villanova - could happen but I've got Clemson here
  • #4 Vanderbilt vs. #13 Siena - not likely but Siena is being considered a possible Cinderella team this year
  • #7 Gonzaga vs. #10 Davidson - I like this upset to happen as I've picked Davidson in my bracket
  • #6 Oklahoma vs. # 11 St. Joseph's - St. Joe's had a good run down the stretch in the A-10, I like them in this upset today
  • #8 Indiana vs. #9 Arkansas - as in a typical 8-9 matchup, this one could go either way
  • #5 Drake vs. #12 Western Kentucky - Drake is a darkhorse this year, but W. Kentucky could pull off that 12-5 upset that tends to happen...I like Drake though
  • #8 Mississippi St. vs. #9 Oregon - another 8-9 matchup where either team has a legit shot to win...I picked Oregon reluctantly
  • #7 Miami (FL) vs. #10 St. Mary's - should be a good game, one that I picked to end in an upset

Headlines: Where's the Upsets?

by Dan Clasgens 3/21/2008 10:06:00 AM

The first day lacked the big upset, in fact only two higher-seeded teams fell, #6 USC to #11 Kansas State and #8 BYU to #9 Texas A&M.  Duke survived a scare against #15 Belmont, 71-70. Xavier played strong, at least for a half, and beat the media darlings, Georgia.  Meanwhile, Kentucky came up short against Marquette.  My personal favorite from the day, K-State taking down USC where it was Bill Walker, not Michael Beasley or OJ Mayo, that stole the show.

Here are the headlines from Day One...

Memo to NBA scouts: Hold the Mayo
Chicago Sun-Times - "On an evening that should remind us why freshmen basketball players never should be lavished with too much hype, who would upstage Mayo and Beasley? His name is Bill Walker, a redshirt freshman himself, who always was lost in Mayo's shadow on their high-school teams but suddenly crashed through Thursday with millions watching."

Dogs' magic runs out in first round
Atlanta Journal-Constitution - "The 14th-seeded Georgia Bulldogs were blown to the nation's capital by a championship in a tornado-interrupted SEC tournament in Atlanta. They landed at the Verizon Center with every intention of continuing to carve a path of improbability through the postseason. But their advance was stopped by Xavier, a team that got every break and was good enough to take advantage of it. The third-seeded Musketeers (28-6) outscored the Bulldogs 41-18 in the last 16 minutes to win 73-61 in the first round of the NCAA tournament."

Crawford doesn't go down without a fight
Lexington Herald-Leader - "The Golden Eagles hounded and pounded Crawford all day long, and still the Motor City Madman hit 13 shots, including five three-pointers, tying his career-high of 35 points."

Perfect Marriage: Hall dealt to Raiders

by Dan Clasgens 3/21/2008 9:50:00 AM

The sports world always brings together interesting marriages of personalties. There was Pete and Johnny on the Big Red Machine.  You had Kobe and Shaq in the NBA, and let's not forget about McNabb and T.O. with the Eagles. However, there's never been anything quite like this - Al Davis and Dante Hall. If you want to talk about two people that deserve each other, these are them.

The Falcons and the Oakland Raiders completed a trade Thursday night that will send two-time Pro Bowl cornerback De Angelo Hall to Oakland in exchange for two draft picks, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Falcons will receive the Raiders' second-round pick this year (34th overall) and their fifth-round pick next year.

Hall signed a seven-year contract that will total $67 million. The NFL Network is reporting $24.5 million of the contract is guaranteed.

Hall has been disgruntled in Atlanta to say the least and his behavior and attitude on and off the field had the Falcons reluctant to extend him as his contract would have been up after the season.

Davis is a freaking joke. The man should have stepped down years ago and in my opinion the only thing keep Mike Brown from being the league's worst owner.  Davis can let his ego go and until the old man croaks Raider Nation is cursed. The team already overpaid big time for Javon Walker and now they break the bank for Hall.  Unlike Walker, Hall's skills and talent make him a perennial Pro Bowler, but whether he can accomplish that in the mess that is Oakland is still to be determined.

It's Official, Bruce Sent Down

by Dan Clasgens 3/21/2008 9:42:00 AM

It has been expected most of the spring, Jay Bruce was not going to make the Opening Day roster.  On Thursday it was confirmed as the Reds' optioned last year's Minor League Player of the Year back to Triple  A Louisville.

The 20-year old was given a shot at the centerfield job as camp broke, but after hitting an unimpressive .262 with just 0 HR's and and 3 RBI's manager Dusty Baker opted to go in a different direction on the big league roster and will now give Bruce a chance to go down and play everyday.

"I'll be back," Bruce told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "When I am, I'll look back on this day and laugh."

"I'm disappointed," he said. "My goal was to make the team. But I understand they're doing what's in the best interest of me and the team. It's not a slap in the face."

Bruce's quick rise for A to AAA last year was impressive, but there don't appear to be much of arguement against giving him more time in Louisville.

"Jay's real close," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "I told him it's nothing he did wrong - just tighten up your game. Experience will do a lot of that. Desire and determination will do the rest."

Baker now will have to decide between newcomer Corey Patterson, who played for him as a Cub, and incumbents Norris Hopper and Ryan Freel to see which player will be the starter when the season begins and how he will break up the playing time at the position.
