Danica Patrick and Michelle Wie are still "O-For's"

by Bret Sims 2/6/2008 4:46:00 PM

Remember when advertisers fell in love with Dancia Patrick and Michelle Wie?

Remember when every middle aged slob who still plays softball didn't care if they were good, just how they looked?

Remember when Michelle Wie had to withdrawl from tournament because of an alleged wrist injury which allowed her not to be penalized for a year?

Remember when athlete's actually had to win something to be considered at the top of their game.

Here is hoping that these two "O-Fors" actually win something this year.  Just one that is all I'm asking because I'm tired of hearing how great they are and yet they haven't won a thing.

Bengals Make Move That Could Win Championship

by Jeremy Fischer 2/6/2008 12:49:00 PM

Alright, I'm sure that you think I'm about to break some unbelievable story on a trade of Chad Johnson, or some other blockbuster deal.  If you thought that, you haven't lived in Cincinnati and been a Bengals fan long enough.  Mike Brown and the Crew don't roll that way.

No.  While the rest of the Striped Nation are still talking about Chad's antics, or the upcoming April draft, or how to fix the defense, the organization goes and makes an under-the-radar move yesterday.  A move that didn't even need a press conference to announce.  They merely sent a press release from the PR department.

They signed P Danny Baugher.  Thank God.  Our long, local nightmare is over.  I can rest easy now knowing that we have a punter to replace Kyle Larson in case he leaves via free agency (he's an unrestricted free agent).

It's just the type of move that a Bill Belicheck coached Patriots team would make.  Remember several seasons ago when they jettisoned periennial Super Bowl hero Adam Vinatieri because they knew they could go and get a guy like Stephen Gostowski from the lower end of the draft?  That's right.  You don't ever, under any circumstances, pay for kicking.  It's that type of shrewd thinking that is going to bring the Lombardi trophy to the Queen City soon.

Oh, by the way.  Did I mention that Baugher was cut from the Bengals three seasons ago, hooked on with the Pats scout team, got cut from that, and was completely out of football all of last season?  Oh well.  If you can't beat 'em, rip former players off their scout team, I suppose.

Wow. Way to make a splash Bengals.

Fantasy profile: Matt Holliday

by Jimmy Dinsmore 2/6/2008 9:43:00 AM

In the first round at pick #7, I managed to get Matt Holliday. Value wise, this is a solid pick. By all accounts, Holliday is the #1 outfielder in all of baseball. Since this is a standard 5x5 league, Holliday is extremely valuable. Last year, Holliday hit a fantasy payload .340 BA (en route to winning the NL batting title), smacked 36 HRs, drove in 137 runs and scored 120 runs. He even swiped 11 SBs. That type of consistency is fantasy gold. He contributes in all five categories. Sure, you'd love to have his SB numbers be closer to the 20 range, but nobody is complaining about those numbers for their #1 OF, real or fantasy. And while it may seem as though Holliday came up out of nowhere last year, his 2006 season numbers indicate that these numbers should be expected from him for years to come. In the 2006 season, he hit .326 with 34 HRs and 114 RBIs. Holliday has a lifetime .317 batting average over three seasons. You don't get more statistically consistent than that.

So, looking beyond all of that, all signs point to Holliday being a force in the NL for many years to come. Holliday's age, 28, indicates that he may not even have hit his prime. He also plays for a young talented team that made it all the way (out of nowhere) to the World Series. That team, and lineup, remains intact which helps his value. And, of course, Holliday plays in the friendly confines of Coors Field where the ball still carries well. One could imagine that Holliday could be a 40+ HR guy if he wanted to forego his contact hitting. However, that's not how he, or his Rockie team mates play baseball. If you're griping that he's not hitting 40 HRs a year or stealing enough bases, I'd suggest you find another outfielder that is more consistent in every category than Holliday. You won't be able to find one.

What will UK's roster look like next year?

by Bret Sims 2/6/2008 9:18:00 AM

Billy G has made it clear that the Kentucky bench will look very different next year than what he has to work with in his first year.

Gone to graduation will be Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford who for the most part are starting to play the kind of ball that Billy wants them to play.

Junior Jared Carter never has and never will be a player that UK can count on so don't be surprised if Gillispie suggests he find somewhere else to call home.

Other than Jodie Meeks and Derrick Jasper there isn't really anyone in the sophomore class that will ever be DIV I talent.  However Perry Stevenson is starting to toughen up and play better.

Patrick Patterson is a clear "Man-Child" as a freshman and UK fans hope he stays at least three years.  AJ Stewart has a lot of talent but has yet to learn the offense and defense well enough to find playing time but he will be back.

Recruits Darius Miller from Maysville, KY (same place Tubby told all time 3-point shooter Chris Lofton that he wasn't good enough for UK) and DeAndre Liggins from Nevada should make an instant impact next year.

With that said, don't be surprised if the following players aren't on the bench next season.

Jared Carter - always injured and when he does play he is too soft and slow in the middle

Mark Coury - Decent DIV II player but not what UK needs in the paint

Mark Krebs - Practice squad material but nothing more

Dusty Mill - Has a WWF wrestler's name but doesn't have the heigth or talent to even be on the practic squad.  Nice young man though.

Dwight Perry - Cousin of Bobby Perry and that is where the similiarity of any basketball skill ends.
