Wildcard the ticket to Super Bowl

by Dan Clasgens 1/25/2008 4:38:00 PM

Running away with your division may not be the way to go anymore. The Giants are just the latest example of a team that failed to win its division, but wound up making it to the Super Bowl. If you look a bit closer you can see a trend developing:

Nine teams have made it to the Super Bowl since 1970
--From 1970 to 1996: 4 Wildcard teams in game; 1 Super Bowl win
--From 1997 thru 2007: - 5 Wildcard teams in game; 3 Super Bowl win

Wildcard team or not, ten road wins is nothing to be taken the lightly. The Giants have a had a tough road just to this point.

Often divisions are wrapped up early enough that teams can still hold on to the lead and avoid late-season charges from their opponents. Still, the teams that end the year hot typically fare well in January.

Australian Open Worth Watching

by Dan Clasgens 1/25/2008 9:32:00 AM

It is a promoter's dream - the Australian Open women's finals featuring two of the world's most beautiful tennis players - Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic. The tall Russian vs. the curvy Serb. Both women are fantastic tennis players on the court and gorgeous models off of it. At 20 years of age, both are in their prime. The event will be worth watching (Friday 9:30pm Eastern - ESPN) for sure. The real question is do you prefer a blonde or a brunette?

Are we raising generation "W"?

by Bret Sims 1/25/2008 8:34:00 AM

I digress for the moment away from the world of sports though it could be applied by possibly stretching it a little.

We have the "Baby Boomers" and "Gen X" and now "Gen Y" but are we creating a new generation called "Gen W"?  As in Generation Wuss!

I'm referring to the way schools and society have decided that virutally anything and everything is too difficult or harsh for children to handle.

The latest is the weather where in the summer if it gets above 72 degrees farenheight parents want tents installed on play grounds so their kids can stay out of the sun.  You have got to be kidding me.  So I assume the little couch potato's never go outside during the summer and God forbid actually get near a swimming pool when the temperature outside hits the 90's.  Then again the sunblock business has grown 400% due to terrified parents.

Now I see where kids in the Cincinnati area miss two days of school because of a light dusting of snow or temperatures that are too cold.  Yeah because we all know that when school is called off that these kids aren't outside for 4 to 6 hours playing in the stuff at sub zero temperatures but should they have to actually be outside for 10 minutes on their way to school it is asking too much.

Yes I have kids.  Yes I have a heart.  I'm just tired of seeing Gen W getting out of control.

That is why atheletes think they deserve to be pampered, get whatever they want and never have to be held accountable.  They have been raised that way.
