Reds hire Jocketty as adviser

by Adam Bartel 1/11/2008 5:58:00 PM
I may not be an expert on these sorts of things, but when rumors are swirling that someone will replace you in your job, and then your boss hires that someone to be his personal adviser...well I hope you're renting and don't own (and in this real estate market who would?).  This could mean absolutely nothing, but it can't make Reds G.M. Wayne Krivsky feel very comfortable.

Hit the bathroom now, it's a long drive from Waco to Danville

by Adam Bartel 1/11/2008 5:07:00 PM

Well it's always nice to see a coach land on his feet.  Former UK head football coach Guy Morriss, who was recently fired from the same position at Baylor University, was back in Kentucky today to interview for a head coaching job.

At Boyle County.  High School.  In Danville, Kentucky (and anyone who's spent a weekend in Danville knows that this isn't even an exciting city by Kentucky's standards).

Yes, a coach that has led two BCS conference programs has decided that he'd rather move down to the high school level than take another shot at a college job.

Granted, Morriss does own a farm in nearby Perrysville, and perhaps he just wants a simpler life.  And Boyle County does have a reputation as one of the powerhouse programs in the state.  But wow, you'd just think Morriss could do better than a high school job.

Or maybe he's just scarred by this, and wants to get out for good.

A-10 needs to shut up and play ball

by Jimmy Dinsmore 1/11/2008 11:26:00 AM
I am so sick of hearing all of the A-10 whine-bags out there claiming they aren't treated like a major conference. Guess what? You're not. You're a mid-major conference, having a good year. For years, they've been sunk by the likes of St. Bonaventure, La Salle and Duquesne being just bottom feeders and the rest of the conference being pretty good. This year, they have 4 ranked programs (Rhode Island, UMass, Dayton and Xavier). Those four teams are good with UD and X being able to beat any team on any given night. St. Joe's is always good for a scrap too. But I saw where Xavier AD Mike Bobinskie turned down an award for Drew Lavender as the mid-major player of the week because he didn't think they were a mid-major siting that they've played 11 "BCS" schools over the last two seasons. You know who plays 11 BCS schools every year, schools in the Big East, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 10 and ACC - the major conference schools. So please Phil Martelli, shove a suck in it. I love the  guy. He's a good coach and knows basketball but the A-10 is now and always will be a mid-major. Their success may fluctuate, but they won't ever be a major conference, or even possess a school that one can consider to be an elite program. Sorry. It's just not going to happen.

2008 Fantasy Draft: Round Two

by Dan Clasgens 1/11/2008 9:21:00 AM

With the playoffs in full swing I continue my five-part series on how I see the first four rounds shaking down, or at least the way it should if your league is not full of idiots. For the sake of argument let's assume it's a 12-team draft and a yardage+TD league. Check out my Round 1 picks and take a look below at Round 2:

ROUND TWO
13. Brandon Jacobs, RB, NYG - He will need to stay healthy and stay on the field and hold off Ahmad Bradshaw, who is having a late-season surge to finish out his rookie campaign.

14. Marshawn Lynch, RB, BUF - His rookie campaign slowed down big time with a mid-season ankle injury. In the end, he nearly averaged 4 yards per carry behind a subpar offensive line. The Bills and their star running back will both get better in '08.

15. Willis McGahee, RB, BAL - Who knows what the future holds for the Ravens? The head coaching spot is vacant and the QB position is a wreck. Still, his seven-game TD streak did not go without notice and after missing just three game in four years he can officially shag the durability tag.

16. Marion Barber, RB, DAL - His value rises if the team moves forward without Julius Jones. Either way Barber's 28 total touchdowns over the past two seasons makes him extremely valuable to fantasy owners.

17. Tony Romo, QB, IND - Barring Jason Garrett leaving Dallas for a better job (don't see it happening this season), Romo is my the No. 3 QB entering the season whether Jessica is still in his head or not....mmmm Jessica! Who wouldn't be distracted?

18. Reggie Wayne, WR, IND - Wayne is entering his prime as Marvin Harrison is on his last leg. Some may argue him higher, but I look for Round 3 to be the round of the wideouts. Even at #18 he is still my No. 2 wideout overall.

19. Willie Parker, RB, PIT - Parker followed up his 16-TD campaign of '06 by only finding the end zone twice in '07. To make matters worse, his season ended in mid-December with a broken leg.

20. Terrell Owens, WR, DAL - T.O. paid huge dividends for fantasy owners this season and now has 28 TD's over his past two years. His age worries me a bit though, he'll be 35 next season and that brings him at No. 3 on my list of receivers.

21. Ryan Grant, RB, GB - From undrafted in last year's fantasy drafts to a second-round pick. He could rise or fall fast though, but no running back ran better in the second-half of the regular season.

22. Jamal Lewis, RB, BAL - Lewis showed enough this season to suggest he still has some gas left in the tank and assuming he stays in Cleveland he'll make for good value here.

23. Laurence Maroney, RB, NE - Too much talent, but too few touches. He is a guy that could slip out of the top 25 in fantasy drafts next season, but easily finish as a top five back.

24. Reggie Bush, RB, NO - Bush is fading fast. It remains to be seen what is going to happen out of the Saints' backfield, but Bush is a part-time player at best and no longer capable of being a No. 1 RB for owners (even in points per reception leagues).

STAY TUNED FOR ROUND 3 - COMING SOON!

The Top 25 Men Who Look Like Old Lesbians

by Dan Clasgens 1/11/2008 8:56:00 AM

Take a man. Add eye work (unisex glasses if eye wear is needed)and Botox. Mix in a bad haircut or unfashionably long hair--if possible a dye job. A little doughy-ness doesn't hurt, either. Have a weakness for turtlenecks and by all means fight aging like it's a battle you can win if you try just a little harder, and there you have it: The winning formula to become a man who looks like an old lesbian.
